Nothing is quite as 'sparkling clean as a Twin. Twin is the definition of clean, but as already mentioned here, also heavy.

Your definition of your common venue, around 200 people and mic'd, from my experience, says the BDRI is more than enough, and the 'clean' channel (preamp) will have good headroom. I've never had a problem with insufficient headroom with my BDRI and the HRDlx should be the same (on the clean channel). I always mic an amp to keep stage volumes at levels that won't impair hearing. If you run high volume on the "drive" channel, it will breakup, but I've had more difficulty getting that breakup at sound levels that I prefer, and that's with a bass, drums, another guitar and sometimes a keyboard.

Your best bet is to first listen to some demos where the presenter tells what the knob setting is as he/she plays. Listen to quite a few. Then try to get a test drive on the amp you are considering buying (or at least a good return policy). Crank it to where you think you'll be playing and then some more. You'll know then.

Pristine clean comes with wattage. Most people want to switch to tube amps so they can get to the edge of breakup for that warm, creamy tone....at least when driven hard. If you want to stay totally clean and have portability, maybe you should stick with solid state.

The HRDLX or BDRI are the ones I'd choose here, and they're not all that heavy,...not to mention they would be within his budget and I agree,...40 watts(mic'd) should be more than enough for a venue of no more than 200 people. I wouldn't go any bigger than a 60 watt
Blues DeVille or Hot Rod DeVille if it were me. Why some people keep suggesting Twin Reverb when the guy said that amp is out of his budget is beyond me. I have the HRDlx III and even unmic'd,it may still even be a bit much for church use when you have a congregation of no more than 140 people,so with a venue of 200 folks,a Blues Deluxe or Hot Rod DLX III should do the job and give you the headroom you want and remain clean,..and be within budget. At 45 lbs. they would be more "portable" than a TR. Just my five cents! And yes,...listen to some demos,...and better yet,if you can,try the amps out first before you buy! Solid state amps may be a LOT lighter in weight, but they just don't have the tone a tube amp gives you! No glow,...no go! :D

Thanks KC, I have decided to go for a BDRI and hoping to try one this or next weekend :D It is actually lighter than my Mustang IV, about 4 or 5 kg lighter so that's a bonus even :)
I have heard that the BDRI is more reliable than HDRI and that the clean sound is better. So that's my first choice atm (unless something comes with a great and affordable price and fits most of my requirements) :)

I just test drove a Blues Deluxe today, and I thought it sounded fantastic! That amp had tone for days!! (okay - the Gibson Firebird I was playing MAY have had something to do with that...)

I didn't play it super clean though- I was after that Bluesy Fender crunch.

Fwiw, the Super Sonic 60 is a great sounding amp, too. The clean channel gives you the choice of Bassman or vibrolux flavor. It's loud as hell, though- this is clearly NOT intended as a home practice amp.

Thanks pyroman - as it happens some guy got a SS 60 for sale - and at a ridiculously low price (new one costs 1450€, he's selling it for 900€) and, unless he sells it sooner, I will be checking it out on Saturday and most likely buying it :D If he does sell it, I will pick up the BDRI :D
