I've been saving up and am really close to pulling the trigger on getting a JCM 800 but buying a 4x12 cabinet to go with it is going to take a little more saving. Question is, can I play the Marshall head through my Hotrod Deville with two 12s and do I need to worry about blowing the stock speakers?

Thanks in advance!

All a matter of output of the amp and wattage capacity of your speakers. And how loud you play. What is that JCM800 rated output?

The JCM 800 is 100 watts, but it doesn't matter because you wouldn't use the power section in the JCM if you use the preamp out of the JCM into the Power Amp In of the HRDvl, so no chance of over-driving the speakers of the HRDvl in that case. However, you should not use the JCM without a speaker connected, as I am not sure if the JCM has shorting speaker jacks.

The stock speakers in the HRDvl are 50 watts each, 100 watts for the pair. If you disconnect the speakers from the HRDvl and plug them into the speaker output of the JCM 800, you could be at risk of blowing the speakers if you crank the JCM.

Thanks Shimmi,

Preamp Out of the JCM ==> Power Amp In of the HRDvl.

I appreciate the advice!

If you do that, I would pull the PI tube from the JCM, just to be on the safe side.

Might not have to worry about plugging it into the HRDlx.

Found a vertical input JCM 800 with cabinet for $1K total. I was expecting to pay about $800 for a good deal on just the head but saw someone asking for an offer on a matching set (white tolex) of head and cab. The tolex is pretty shredded on the back of the cabinet but if it sounds good that's good enough for me. Headed to check it out tomorrow. If all goes well, look for a New Amp Day post in the Lounge tomorrow or the next day!

But just in case and hopefully not (knock on wood), what's the PI tube and where would I find it?

PI (phase-inverter) tube is V5, which is the small tube right beside the output tubes. The output tubes are the four big ones (EL34s), and the PI is the one immediately to the left when looking at the back of the amp. Count the tubes from left to right looking at the back of the amp. V1 through V4 are the preamp tubes, V5 is the PI, V6 through V9 are output tubes.

Thanks! I'll let you know soon if I need to do this!

Shimmi, great news. I got her!

Sorry to ask for advice that I didn't end up using but I couldn't say no to getting both the amp and cab for such a good price.

Behold!

She sounded great when I got to crank her up in the dude's garage I bought her from but haven't had a chance to fire her up in the ol' homestead just yet.

Tomorrow I work from home so I'm planning on putting her through her paces during my lunch break. More to follow! :D

Arggh!!!!

Finally got a chance to crank 'er up and damn if she wouldn't come on.

Couldn't hear a thing until I cranked both the Master and the Volume and then just heard a thin screeching coming from the amp. Nothing from the cabinet

Plugged the speaker out (no preamp out) on the JCM to the Poweramp in on my HRDlx and got some tone so I'm figuring the problem must be with the input into the cabinet. Now I don't have any experience with a soldering gun but my bass player is quite handy, so I figure on taking the cabinet over to him and see if we can't get this fixed.

I'll keep you posted!

You are lucky that you didn't blow up your HRDlx, or your JCM! The speaker out of any amp should only connect to a speaker, or a device made for the amp output. Never plug a speaker out into a Power Amp In. :!:

Hopefully, you just have a bad connection in the JCM or speaker cab. Keep in mind, that if you do have a bad connection between speaker and amp, you can blow the amp, as there must be a speaker or other load connected to a tube amp when in use.
