I'm thinking of getting a DRR and would like to know how the sound compares with a TRR *played at moderate volumes in a small club* and pushing the amp hard into strong tube distortion isn't a major requirement. I have a vintage 2001 TRR and like the sound but want the easier portability of the DRR.
TRR: 4 6L6 twin 12" C12K 85W
DRR: 2 6V6 single 12" C12K 22W

If you have experience using both amps in small clubs, how would you describe the sound difference? How does 6V6 compared to 6L6 change sound? what about tube rectifier and any differences in trem/reverb circuits?

Sonically, these amps are similar with the DRRI sounding a bit "shinier" due to the different output tubes. However, "moderate" volume for a Twin Reverb (of any persuasion) still means a very clean, almost "surf-y" vibe while that same level with a Deluxe Reverb (also of any persuasion) begins to exhibit signs of compression and the onset of some "grit". Push the latter harder and the tube-rectified power supply begins to sag and the amp goes into saturation and overdrive. Both amps utilize the same tremolo circuit -- some "tick", some don't (luck of the draw). With either platform, you'll find that a speaker swap can make a substantial improvement to the overall tone.

I own two Twin Reverbs and three Deluxe Reverbs and I'd rather not drag around a 100-lb behemoth when a 50-lb combo will get the job done.

Thanks for those great comments about tone. Regarding weight, the DRRI is 42 lbs and the TRRI is 64 lbs. If you haven't carted a TRRI around (I have to several gigs) that doesn't sound like a huge difference but it is huge! Those C12K speakers weight almost 10 lbs so that's a significant part of the weight difference and the OT and PT for the TRRI would be bigger. I think anything over 50lbs is behemoth-like to carry.

C12K's are feather-weights compared to JBL D120F's, which tip the scales at nearly 16.8 lbs......each.

And my '78 TR weighs close to 25 lbs more than my TRRI because it's a 135-watt ultra-linear model, with gonzo-sized trannies.

Two of my Deluxe Reverbs are in custom cabinets, each equipped with a 15-inch JBL D130F (those speakers weigh over 18 lbs each).

Putting JJ 6V6S tube in and replacing the tube retifier with a solid state in the DRRI will get you closer the TRRI sound. It add higher headroom and 10 more watts. It also sounds alot better.

And perhaps over-stresses the feeble output tranny to the point of catastrophic meltdown.

Need a more powerful amp?

Then buy one.
