Art1...how goes the new amp? Did you open it up yet to get a gander at the inards? Kind of curious what it looks like.

I know it has only been a few weeks but...I figured you must have dried out by now.

Between work and playing guitar, I've been too busy to open her up. That just might happen this weekend though. I did get the schematic from consumer relations though. :D

Send me a copy via e-mail if you get a chance, Art.

Thanks!

That amp looks real nice Art, congrats. How are you getting along with it after a few weeks?
I have to say those Silverface CDR amps are the first production Fender amps that actually have tempted me for some time.

Funnily, I did have a beautiful 1974 Silverface Pro Reverb and while I owned it I always felt like I had a red headed step-child and an amp you had when you couldn't lay out the cash for a Blackface model of some sort, and I now realise with much regret how beautiful that amp sounded.

Slowly getting her broken in. Sounding sweeter all the time. Definitely a keeper! The LP doesn't sound half bad through it either. This looks like its going to be the main amp for a while and the other amps will have to be happy just watching.

Very pleased. Need to get an A/B switch now that I have the sound of two amps in one.

Art

P.S.
The LP is an Epiphone 60's tribute with the '57 USA pickups and the push-pull series/parallel switching.

Art1,

Could you have a look at this thread? Post any input that you might have.

http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=90745

Wondering if the reverb on the Custom channel is weak compared to the reverb on the Vintage channel? :?:

Done! Glad I don't have that problem.

I just go a new 68dlx today, the input 2 on the custom channel? Heaven! Turn up a bit more. Gretsch 6120 setzer going into a re20 echo, beautiful!

Congrats on the new amp! Great choice.

I've tried the 2nd input on both my CDR and CVR and all I notice is a bit less gain but not much tonal difference.
Maybe I just didn't try it long enough, but it didn't tempt me because it just sounded quieter.

Your experience seems different.
What have you noticed different tonally using the 2nd input?

I too love and prefer the custom channel more so on both amps.
But the vintage channel is still sweet especially when I want a bit more top end on my Strat.
That's the beauty about these "custom" silver faces, 2 different tone stacks with verb on both channels, unlike the resissues where both channels sound the same except no reverb on ch. 1.

I read a write up by someone who took the reverb return put an rca to 1/4" adapter and plugged it into the non reverb channel. That allowed him to have more control over the reverb level and tone using the channels eq.

I wonder how that would work on the custom amps since they too feed the verb circuit?
Seems it would start to feedback as the verb return would then feed the verb send.
Maybe it would sound cool if the levels were adjusted and controlled just right.
I'd like to try it.
Anyone know why NOT to try this?

Rverb, the second input on our Customs definitely results in a lower-gain tone. It's not only quieter, it's also cleaner. The first input is much thicker, which is perfect for single coils. The second input is better for humbuckers, particularly if you play jazz or anything really clean.

Yes, it sounds lower in gain/level/volume.
Cleaner perhaps in the same way a 12at7 would be cleaner compared to a 12ax7?
But a tube change can also make a tone change along with a gain/level change.

Since the input tubes are the same with the higher and lower gain input, what would cause a tone change?
Does the lower gain input have a different signal path taking it through a different tone circuit, or different part/path of the tone circuit?

I've tried my ES335 and Schecter C1, both HB guitars in the 2nd input, and I don't hear any tone differences but I do hear a signal volume differencel
But, that's just me and my near 50yr old hearing not being as it used to be.
I'll give it some more experimentation. :)

Each input, for amps with two input jacks for a given channel, has a resistor connected to it in the signal path, typically 68k ohms, before the first tube, one 68k resistor connected to each jack. When using input 1, the switching part of the input jacks places both of the input resistors parallel and the parallel pair are placed in series with the signal path, effectively 34k ohms of resistance before the first tube. When using input 2, only one of the resistors is placed in the signal path, 68k ohms of resistance before the first tube. As you can see, input 2 will have twice the resistance in the signal path, attenuating that signal by 6 db, giving much lower volume for input 2.

The input jack resistors work the same regardless of which tubes are in the signal path. So whether you use 12AX7, 5751 or 12AY7, input 2 will always be attenuated by 6 db and give lower volume than input 1. If the input to the first tube is attenuated, it will affect the volume and the gain to a large degree, which will have some impact on the tone. You might notice that the tone is not quite the same when using input 2 with the volume turned up as it is when using input 1 with the volume lowered, in the same way that turning down your guitar volume affects the tone to some degree.
