Ok, here's a stupid question from a newbie here (just joined today).

I have a Fender '65 DRRI (had it about 13 years, I guess....can't remember when I actually bought it) but I'm now hankering (wanting a Fender Twin amp (if I get one, I'm giving my '65 DRRI amp to my Stepfather).

My questions are, besides the weight difference, what is the tonal difference I'll get with a Twin? I'm going for the Danny Gatton sound (got Bardens in my paisley tele) and I reckon I just want something that might give me a little more "punch".

Also, do the Twins have a line-out on the back? I'm hoping I can land a spot as guitarist on my church's P&W team and they use DI boxes to run the amps through the soundboard.

I hope some of this made sense. I have Gatton's two Hot Licks DVDs and I've always loved his tone (even if it is a little "ice picky" due to the Barden pups).

Any suggestions would be very welcome and maybe, by this time next Christmas, I can own a Fender Twin (I'm mildly disabled with Cerebral Palsy & Hydrocephalus but God has gifted me to play several instruments - but I mainly stick with electric guitar).

And one more thing: How do I find out when my amp was made? I've read the documents here about dating amps but - I can't quite understand them.

Thanks for the help, everyone!!

Take Care/God Bless,
Tony Trout

Left "unassisted", a Twin Reverb will never give you anything but loud and clean. The rear panel contains the same features as your DRRI -- no line-out jack. And like the DRRI, it benefits from a better speaker selection and some "tube rolling". I've owned a '99 TRRI since January of 2001 and those are my observations.

Which Fender "Twin"? These are all Fender "Twins".

http://ampwares.com/?brand=fender&line=twin

Danny Gatton was known to use this Twin among other amps:

http://ampwares.com/amplifiers/fender-n ... n-big-box/

All are way louder than you would ever need in a P&W group.

My late parents lived in Murphy NC for a few years in the early 1980's. My wife and I visited them in Murphy a few times. Pretty nice area back then. I'm sure it has changed since. :D

My suggestion would be to take your 13 year old amp and fit it with a new set of power tubes and then see if you still have a hankerin' for the twin. I've heard the JJ 6v6's can take on that 6l6 tone and that might be right up your alley. I believe other members might be able to chime in on that.

I agree with Bluesky that a twin might be a little too much amp for P&W. The DRRI is definitely better suited for that environment.

Just my 2c. Hope this helps.

Whenever I'm asked to play at church, I always bring my blonde Spankmaster Reverb. It's plenty loud even un-miked and the blonde/wheatstraw cosmetics look less "sinful".

Hmmmm. The OP's first post in the forum was June 2008. His second, October 2013. Does that mean we will next hear from him sometime in 2018? :?

Only if the E.T.'s bring him back again.

I appreciate the response, guys...but not the snide remarks. I hadn't posted simply because I had totally forgotten that I had a membership here - I don't think I'm the first one that it's happened to....

I'm actually thinking of keeping the DRRI for church. I'd like to have the following: http://ampwares.com/amplifiers/fender-t ... evil-twin/

As for Murphy, yes, it has changed a lot - and not in a good way, either. Drugs are everywhere and we've got a casino coming into town in the next few years.

Evil Twin will be loud and clean to infinity (and beyond!!!)

One note. You need to use very good 6L6GCs in these amps. Modern made tubes would mean TS STR-6L6GC or EH 6L6GC. What would really be nice is a set of mil spec Philips or GE 7581A. These are super tough tubes, that can easily handle 30-32 watts per tube.

I have a set of Philips-ECG 7581A in my TRRI. Coupled to the JBL K120.. you will have all the power you'd every need for any occasion.

You're right. This forum is a graveyard of posts by people who fly in, ask a question, people take the time to provide a good answer, and the OP disappears and is never heard from again.

Right about what? I explained WHY I just recently came back (lost password) and I had, honestly, forgotten that I had even registered here.

I don't think Bill was dissing you in any way. He was just making an observation about what happens here a LOT.

I believe he was agreeing with you in that you are not the first one that it's happened to.

That's how I saw it as well.

A good direct box should enable you to take a signal from the speaker and run it to the board. You unplug the speaker from the speaker output of the amp, connect it to the direct box, then run a *SPEAKER CABLE* from the direct box to the speaker out on the amp using the direct box's "THROUGH" output. Then, run a balanced cable to a line-in input on the mixing board.
FWIW, I recently bought a DRRI fro a P/W guitarist who was going to a Princeton because the Deluxe was too loud. Anecdotal evidence suggests that, seeing you bring in a Twin would cause most P/W sound techs to have a stroke. If you want loud and clean, the Twin is the ticket, but you'll never get it above "2". Of course, you could get an attenuator with a built-in line-out, which is the two birds, one stone solution.
Crank it, Jesus still loves you.
