Hi,

I picked up a new DRRI yesterday, and seem to have found 2 problems (maybe related):

1. Background noise - sounds like a record player before the start of a track (quiet popping and static sound, occasional louder pops). This happens even if there is nothing plugged into the inputs, but is intermittent, and happens whether or not reverb is switched on

2. While trying to track down the cause of problem 1 I found that if I turn all controls right the way down and turn up the reverb control up, once it gets to 6 or 7 I get a very consistent feedback which is controllable with the reverb knob - turn it up and the feedback gets louder, turn it down and the feedback goes away. Again this happens even if there is nothing plugged into the inputs, but this only happens if the reverb is switched on

Any thoughts? I'm guessing neither of these behaviours is normal, and that the best bet is to return it to the shop (PITA as it's a long drive over there)

jimcross1981, Sounds like noisy tube and/or tube-socket contact. I'd first get some good contact cleaner (again, a plug for Caig Dexoit GN5) --- use a little to clean the pins and sockets for all tubes. Insert and remove each tube several times to clean the contacts.

If this doesn't solve the noise issue, you will prolly need to replace the noisy tubes (and yes, even brand new they can be noisy).

The feedback which is controlled by the reverb knob is most prolly a microphonic 12AT7 reverb driver tube or the 12AX7 reverb recovery tube. The Fender style reverb section really pushes the 12AT7 to near its current passing limit. You need a really good tube. Here, a good mil spec 12AT7WA or 6201 is worth it.

I like the mil spec Sylvania 12AT7WA (or WB or WC):

+1

I believe it's 90 days for the bottles.

If the Reverb Feedback persists after a tube change, then it will be the SETUP of the ferrite beeds in the Reverb Tank that are off-center a bit much. When they are off-center they become more sensitive, and those speaker magnets above start to cause oscillation.

This is the 24th thread in the past two weeks noting major problems with a brand new DRRI, PRRI, or the new '68 silverface amp. Just an observation.

Yes Shimmi, I call them beads because they are so small and they sit on the reverb spring ends like a bead on a necklace. They are the miniature ferrite cores that floate inside the reverb inductors.

Perhaps it's an indication that FMIC have reached the practical limit of just how cheap you can go before a total collapse and this is the first wave of repercussions soon to be followed by many more.
I dunno.
Just a thought.
It could also just be a co-inky-dink.

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for the responses, very helpful!
I'll give the contacts a clean first and see how that goes, then get the shop to replace any tubes that need replacing.

They have offered to replace the whole amp, but if others are having problems it sounds like that may not be any better! I also replaced the speaker with a Cannabis Rex (absolutely ama ing difference!) and would rather not have to swap the speaker out again in order to exchange the amp

For serious tone junkies who need reliable no-excuses/no-alibi gear, those are the only two practical options remaining.
