I just acquired a mint condition princeton reverb from 2011 and I've decided to keep it. The new problem is what to add. The only pedal I have is a fulltone OCD overdrive and it does a decent job, but I might want a second one. I've also noticed the punch it has on cleans is a little strong for me sometimes. What should I do for this? What would you guys recommend?

If you want a grittier vibe you might try the Proco Rat or Digitech's Bad Monkey. The Fulltone is great (I own and use one) but it's more of a clean boost pedal than a fully-saturated-and-compressed overdrive effect.

Congrats! I just bought one, too. Been playing with tubes and really like the GE 5751s I popped in. The amp runs almost dead quiet and the reverb is a little more under control, even at 10. I replaced the 12AT7 with a NOS one. As for pedals, I am using a Pigtronix Fat Drive with it and really dig the sound. Best of luck to you!

I know this is an old topic, but since I searched many old threads before buying pedals it seems only fair to post the results of my experimentation over the last few months.

I played through the amp clean for my first few weeks to determine my favorite clean tone with my G&L Asat Special played mostly through the neck pickup. I try to protect my ears and keep my neighbors happy, so I landed on the following settings:

Volume - 4.5, Treble - 4, Bass - 6, Reverb - 4, Speed - 3, Intensity - 5

This isn't enough volume to get tube breakup, so my first purchase was a TS9 set to the following for my SRV-style rhythm tone:

Drive - 1, Tone - 3, Level - 6

I added a Boss Digital Delay DD7 to thicken things up a bit since I play more often in my living room than with a full band. Settings:

E.Level - 9 o'clock, F.Back - 12 o'clock, D.Time - 1 o'clock, Mode - Analog

These two pedals kept me happy for about a month until I settled on the settings listed above.... now all I needed was a searing lead tone and crunchy rhythm for my harder rock songs. Work's been kinda slow lately, so I did a ton of internet research before dragging my rig into my favorite local music shop today (Bananas at Large in San Rafael).

I knew I wanted a Fulltone pedal because the last available plug on my Voodoo Lab ISO 5 is an 18v supply (my tuner and wah take up the two other 9v jacks). They're also handmade right here in CA like my guitar and amp.

I really thought I'd come home with the OCD pedal after reading all of the rave reviews and listening to YouTube clips, but the clear winner with my rig was the Secret Freq. It now lives between the TS9 and the DD-7 on my pedal board. It sounded much warmer to my ears than the OCD (or the '70 fuzz) and works great for both crunchy rhythm when engaged by itself or searing lead when boosted with the TS9. I'm sure I'll be tweaking this one for another month or so, but right now I'm loving these settings:

Volume - 1, Distortion - 5, Freq. - 11 o'clock, Highs - 3 o'clock

Pedal Chain: Guitar-Wah-Tuner-TS9-SF-DD7-Amp

My 3 month tone journey is now at an end and I can focus on getting my technique to match

Cheers,
Mark
