I returned the 68 DR and got a Mojotone kit. I was meticulous about the grounding and it's dead silent on idle and sounds great. Sorry other people are having issues. I know how frustrating it is.

If you're serious about having a DR and know how to correctly assemble a kit, you'll find them available from Marsh, Allen, Weber, Mojotone, and (I think) Mission.

I got the new '68 Deluxe Reverb and found it had a lot of background noise (compared to my '65 DRRI), had a very loud tremolo 'ticking' noise, and had discolored patches on the top of the amp. I returned it for a new one and found the new one had the same noise level and the same tremolo ticking along with a lot of reverb feedback and even more noticeable discolored patches on the top of the amp. Anyone else finding this? Are these just problems with the first batch of this amp, or will they all be like this? Too bad; aside from this stuff, it is a great sounding amp!

I just received the new '68 Deluxe Reverb. I experience exactly the same problems as described above - a lot of background noise, very loud tremolo 'ticking' noise and a lot of reverb feedback. I am extremely disappointed.

Sorry to hear this.

Its very sad when such a renown firm starts (or continues) producing low quality instruments hiding behind the big man's name.

I was contemplating buying one of these, but after reading hundreds of similar treads all over the net I'm adamant not to waist my money on this low quality products.

Fender, do you hear us?

This *may* be true but many folks work primarily in a studio and the mediocre S/N is much more apparent when recording. That fact alone probably makes these amps ill-suited for that environment.

I have been a Fender user since 1973 when I bought my first Strat, new for $440. A lot of money for a 15 year old back then. I've had lots of amps, guitars and effects since, and have always liked pre-CBS Fender amps, and also have owned and used many of the post-80's amps. I took the plunge and bought a new 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb a few months ago from a online seller. The amp made a VERY loud pop when powered down into standby. Loud enough to startle and alarm anyone in the room. So I sent it back and had them send me another one, which they sent 2 day air.
Factory sealed, Fender box with Manufacture date about a month and a half back. It did the exact same thing as the first one. Took it down to authorized Fender electronics service shop with a stellar reputation and was told that I was looking at as long as 6 weeks shop time to allow for Fender to send out the parts. So I sent it back as well and am now going to wait about a year and maybe Fender will get their manufacturing line issues resolved.
Sad, because I really like all the design ideas of this amp and really wanted one. Working on the amp myself (which is within my skill set) wasn't an option due to warranty restrictions. I don't think you should have to work on a brand new amp anyway.
Also, I have found that I have to really hunt and pick through the new Fender Guitars to find a fairly good one, as I think you always have had to, but it seems much harder to find a fresh Strat or Tele that's decent, the last 10 years or so.
Maybe these are the "new CBS days" at Fender?

Seems to me that ALL Deluxe Reverbs have the loud pop when powered down. This is not unique to the 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb.

Does the '68 Custom DR use a GZ34/5AR4 tube rectifier? If so, you really don't need to use the standby switch. Just turn-on amp with zero volume. The slow warm-up nature of the GZ34 should prevent most "pops" & fears of cathode stripping.

That's true (and contrary to popular beliefs about using the Standby Switch) the GZ34 has a comparatively slow warm up and allows for a gradual ramp up, so the Power Tubes see a gentle and gradual increase of voltage and they are thus already warmed up and ready by the time the GZ34 is producing full voltage. This is effectively more gentle than using the standby and slamming them with high voltage. A different, faster warmup Rectifier is of course a different story because it's ready to supply the power tubes before they are really warmed and ready, in that case the Standby is important to allow the power tubes that extra warmup time.

I played another twin over the weekend the reverb was much quieter then mine, so I unplugged the foot switch and it was quieter! sounds like a grounding issue. When I play loud i hardly hear it so its not really a problem but I wonder if the dealer would give me another? I half to take the pedal in I guess. I played some bogner amps at GC but man the twin just sounds fabulous! it can hang with the best! I redone the preamp tubes and a better speaker cable mine sounded a little more deeper sounding like the vintage ones

Footswitch problems with the re-issue amps seem to be prolific. Try another switch and see if the symptom abates.
