I just picked up a ergnator tweeker 15 head and am going to builds a speaker cab for it. I'm looking for input on should I build a 2x12 or a 1x12 for it also should I make it a open or closed back. And suggestions on speakers also. It will be for my band which plays classic rock and southern rock. I use a SG 61 ri and a Les Paul.

Congrats on the Egnater! If it were me I would go with a closed back , 2x12, with Kendrick Black Frames, but hey that's me!

It's likely to crap-out on you no matter what speaker you pair it with, so I wouldn't spend too much.

The Kendricks are great speakers. Only knock on them is they ain't cheap at $150 each, but if you like the tone of a C12N (my all time favorite) they are pretty good reproductions of em tone wise. Very lively speakers.

I really like the Kendrick Black Frames, I have one (the 8 in my 68 Champ) and a friend has the 10's in his SFSR and they are just well made, fine sounding speakers.

Thanks for the help. If the head craps out the cab is still fine. If I wanted a cheap cab I would just buy one. I kinda want to build something nice. If it works out well I might get a nicer low wattage head. I'm just asking about the cab and speakers now though.

I would second the motion for a closed-back 2x12, but maybe with V30s wired for 8 ohms.

And, maybe delete your duplicate thread before someone responds, then you can't delete it.

I would design the cab with a convertible back to permit "tuning" based on the type of speaker(s) you intend to install.

Well the little head showed up today so I tried it out through a garbage 4x12 crate cab. This thing got some balls. What do you guy think of a 1x15 closed back.

A single 15 will break up a bit faster, so with your classic rock tunes, that might just be about right and a different way to go. If you are going to go 15, I would try and find a nice vintage Jensen Concert series. I put one of them in my Bantam and I was amazed at the tone, especially as I had never had a single 1x15 amp. Sounds GREAT!

I also kind of like Arjay's idea of a tunable cab.

Yes it will be a convertible for sure since I do like to screw with things a lot. I never seem to get it right the first time.

Have you considered building two 112 cabs?
You could build one open back and one closed back.
It would look cool like a mini stack.
When you pack your gear around two 112s is easier to carry than one 212.

I have been giving this serious thought and thinking this is what I will do. I will be able to mix and match speakers when ever I want. Now just to figure which speakers to get. I've decided to get one vintage 30 and something else.

My Rivera rig is configured such. A 112 open back combo with a 112 closed back ext cab. Makes a great combination. Great bottom end not unlike a Vibroking. I tried a pair of Celestion Vintage 30s in it (loud crunchy midrange) and also a pair of Celestion Alnico Golds (bright and spanky). Eventually went back to the stock G12T-75s (deep and breathy with good chime).

Perhaps a V30 in the open cab and a G12T in the closed back?

TBAZZ...If you're going to go with two separate cabs and use a Vintage 30 in one, then might I suggest a good vintage C12N for the other cab as a good counter balance to the Celestion.

Be sure to keep us posted on this.
