It sounds HUGE......

Image

Like a poor-man's Vibroverb. I call it the "Spankmaster".

No problems keeping up with amps of twice or even three times the output power.

Is that some kind of pedalboard that has a lid and basically opens and closes like a box?

There are now a couple of reviews of this amp up on youtube. Easy to find so I won't bother linking here.

just search for "68 deluxe" on youtube and you'll find a few reviews....some of an original but a few of this new blue light special.

I don't think that's an issue, Supro. Your old Twin Reverb likely had a chassis that was wired in full or part down in Mexico just like my '79. The more significant problem IMO is that GAWD-AWFUL RoHS-COMPLIANT SOLDER. I'd pay a premium to have an amp assembled with conventional 60/40 lead-tin solder.

I still have a small stash that I had when I had electronics shop in high school in the early 70's. I found it in my Dad's garage after he passed away. I use it in all the amps I build. It seems to melt at a lower temperature and flows much better too.

And to answer the sound better question, I don't think it sounds better, it gives you a better solder joint thus it's more reliable.

Our local Ace Hardware Store is still stocking tin-lead solder. I bought several rolls in differing sizes a while back (just in case the EPA brownshirts raid the place like they did with Gibson).

I'm sure it is less expensive because it is made in Mexico while the DRRI is made in the USA.

Likely the sole reason for the price differential.

That and the 65 Deluxe clearly states Cabinet Material 7-Ply 5/8" Birch Plywood while the 68 Deluxe does not seem to specify. Might be MDF.

Could the OP take a look at his cabinet and see if it is Plywood or MDF?

All-MDF construction would add three to four pounds to the overall weight. As well, the cabinet would be less resonant than one built of real wood.

If one of the '68 owners could take a look at their amp, please let us know. The Plywood cabs also tend to last much longer.

... not really sure what I'm looking for - the inside of my '68 DRVM looks and feels just like the inside of my '65 DRRI - painted black - looks like real wood...

Likely it's the same plywood construction as the '65 blackface re-issue's.
