What's going on with this?:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifie ... 0s-speaker

Gets breakup at lower volumes and "more rock n roll" sound means more gainy and less shimmering cleans for "modern" kids who want to play more distorted stuff and not have to turn it so loud to get breakup?

Is this somehow lower quality than the 65 reissues for pure clean tone?

From the product description it would seem that the "vintage" channel remains as per standard AB783 configuration. Only the "custom" channel features the specific mods.

Why is this one $100 cheaper if its clean channel is just as good and it has a 2nd channel that the 65 does not have at all?

Also the blue tube bling light is preferable because that color blue is better than red and would also be unique.

Ask FMIC directly -- we're not privy to that type of corporate info.

I have the '68 DR and it is a sweet amp! I have a '65 DRRI and the '68 vintage channel has a bit more sparkle and some added low end - almost like a stereo with the loudness switch on. The custom channel is very nice with some added low end. I'm sure it is less expensive because it is made in Mexico while the DRRI is made in the USA.

Likely the sole reason for the price differential.

I would have gladly paid the extra $100 to have it built here.

I don't think that's an issue, Supro. Your old Twin Reverb likely had a chassis that was wired in full or part down in Mexico just like my '79. The more significant problem IMO is that GAWD-AWFUL RoHS-COMPLIANT SOLDER. I'd pay a premium to have an amp assembled with conventional 60/40 lead-tin solder.

Why (and, again, I'm not being snotty)? Are you saying without that it does not sound as good, or is it an issue of how long it will last or stand up to gigging use? For $850.00, what if it has great tone but lasts only 10 instead of 30 years?

This is like an in between of the other guy's mustang argument....you can buy four $850 amps for the price of one $3400 amp. That takes care of longevity issue.

But this argument is invalid if you think the TONE is sub par from day one.

I can't wait til you find one in your local shop and give us your assessment after you play it. I really like the blue light.

Nothing wrong with that, Cliff. I've still got my '94 DRRI and it sounds better than the day it was new.

I too rolled my own tube array (mostly NOS JAN's, original GT rectifier) then re-capped the filter stage and bias board with Sprague's. The OEM speaker went bye-bye decades ago and the chassis is now mounted in a custom cabinet housing a 15-inch JBL D130F.

The original speaker was one of those 100-watt Eminence's, with the Kevlar cone and the concrete voice-coil former.
