The '65 Deluxe Reverb RI or the Limited Edition Blues Junior Hot Rod Series with Greenback speaker.

If you could only get one now which would you pick?

Wow, I'm surprised there is no love for the Blues Junior. I liked it a lot.

My first choice would be the Twin Tube RI but I had it and it scared the crap out of the dogs and kids. It's way too loud for home use.

I guess I'll give the Deluxe a shot. Thanks for the votes and feedback.

Buy as you like.

The options are starkly quantifiable -- traditional tone as designed and patented by Clarence Leonidas Fender or a homogenized corporate fizz-box as embodied by today's nebulous contemporary technology.

It's as simple as that.

I was hoping to read your $.02 about this. I'll go with the Deluxe - which is what I wanted all along. But, I think you are being too hard on the LE Blues Jr.

Perhaps.

But I'm confident that had some junior engineer in Leo's amp shop brought him that miserable design for production consideration, Fender would've drop-kicked his azz right offa the goddam planet in fifteen minutes flat and given his assigned parking spot to the janitor.

Of course, everyone's opinion is different!

Myself, I'd go with the LE BJr with the Greenback. I enjoy hearing others play through Blackface-type amps, but when I play through one it just doesn't suit me. In fact, I had an Allen Accomplice (hand-wired hot-rodded deluxe reverb clone) and wanted something a bit smaller and lighter. I ended up with a LE BJr III w/Cannabis Rex. At first I didn't like the stock BJr IIIs, but after hearing a few Limited Editions with various decent speakers I found that I prefer them over any of the older stock Blues Junior amps.

Now, is my previous Allen Accomplice, or a new DRRI a better (in build quality) amp than my new BJr III? Of course they are. The guts of the Allen was a work of art, and the DRRI, while still being a PCB, at least has chassis-mounted tube sockets. They are both built better than any BJr by far... there is no comparison whatsoever. The clean tones of these amps are, IMO, very very sweet. However, when using dirt pedals, I find that they sound better to me through my BJr III w/C-Rex than they did through the Accomplice. If I played only clean tones, then a Blackface style amp would be great. But, since I mostly use OD/Distortion, I'm happier with the BJr III.

My big complaint? The same as everyone else... a Blues Junior is not very well-built and can sound a bit "small and boxy" (although I feel that my new amp is not as boxy as the older versions). Fender could have done a better job, but I realize that they were building to a certain price-point. I would love if they offered an "upgraded" BJr III with better quality parts, chassis mounted pots and tube sockets, a high quality PCB, and a slightly larger real wood cabinet. I'd be willing to pay more for a well-built, more reliable Blues Junior. I'd prefer a "hand-wired" version, but that may cost too much!

You've nailed the entire issue precisely on the head: everyone wants a Champ-sized combo that sounds like a Dual Showman and weighs less than their iPhone yet costs no more than a Kit-Kat Bar a a 7-11 store. It ain't happening (nor will it ever).

It always cracks me up when I see people playing a some cheap amp I wouldn't take if you gave it to me but they'll spend two or three times that every two years to get the latest iPhone or iPad. I also chuckle when I see them with their toy amps and plugging in a Select quilt top Strat or some other top dollar guitar, like that's gonna give 'em killer tone.

Leo (and/or his "crew") came up with the BJr in the first place, except it was called a Tremolux 6G9 D-FA.
