Hi guys.

just brought brand new blues junior v3.

the stock speaker isn't great (don't know why they don't just put a decent speaker in)

was thinking celestion vintage 30. my amp tech suggested g 12 h.

I want something not quite so brittle, nice and vintage smooth tone.. any suggestions..

I nearly brought a used hrd with a jenson, that sounded good but not sure of the model.

so any suggestions would be great.

thanks

Yes, you'll probably want a new speaker, but I'd suggest first giving the stock one time to break in before swapping. You might be satisfied once it is broken in.

There are many videos on YouTube demonstrating quite a few different speakers in the Blues Jr. There were also quite a few different speakers installed in the various forms of the Blues Jr. that have been special runs. They too will give you a better idea of what you like. Do search YouTube.

My standard answer
Swamp Thang or Cannabis Rex
If it were mime I would undo the "sparkle mod" if it sounds brittle.

I like the stock Lightning Bolt speaker especially when its broken in, I've tried several speakers with the BJ III and always end up putting the stock speaker back. I should mention I prefer the amp on the clean side and use pedals with a humbucker loaded guitar but cant say how it reacts to single coils if thats what you use!

eminence texas heat. I have a spare sitting around. good choice for this amp? I just got a used junior, and wondered if anyone used this speaker in theirs.

I swapped out the stock speaker on my BJ III to a Cannabis Rex. I got it from SWEETWATER, a demo speaker already broken in and with a limited warranty. The amp is just sweet bliss. Coupled with my TS808 pedal is a bad $@! blues machine.

Based on descriptions on the Eminence site, Billm site, specs, and all available info, the TH is on the top of my list of speakers that I want to try. I haven't yet, and I believe that there is a thread here somewhere in which one of our forum members tried the TH, but in which amp I can't recall.

From the Billm site:

"Eminence Texas Heat
The Texas Heat is one of the most popular of Eminence’s line of Patriot speakers, and for good reason. It has great tonal breadth, strong bass, prominent, slightly smoky mids, and a smooth top end. When The ToneQuest Report tested a bunch of the Patriots a couple of years ago, they reported that the Texas Heat improved every amp they tried it in–and they tried a lot. It’s more efficient than most other aftermarket speakers, so you get your 15 watts’ worth. The only criticism I have of the Texas Heat is that when playing clean, the highs can sound a bit disconnected from the rest of the tone, almost as if my high E string was connected to another, smaller speaker. It sounds better if you roll off the bass and boost the mids a bit to fill it in. And when you crank it, distortion tones are sweet, not spiky and harsh.

I had a Blues Jr., but traded it for a Blues Deville 4 x 10. I put a c-rex in the Blues Jr. and it did sound really good, the guy I traded with loves it.. I also have a 2 x 12 with two 16ohm 12" Texas Heats in a birch cab. I use to hook the Blues Jr. ext. to that setup along with the c-rex that was in it, it sounded pretty beefy that way...

There are a number of speakers that will make an improvement in the Blues Jr. and Eminence makes several of them. Having said that, you'll not optimize the sound of the Blues Jr. unless you use an extension cab (and preferably a 2X12) in lieu of the internal one. The very small size of the Blues Jr. cab poses significant limitations.

I agree with this statement.

Try not to spend any more money on speaker swaps until you let the stock driver break in fully. If the time comes that the speaker is broken in and you are still not happy please consider upgrading the cabinet first as that is the source of the vast majority of complaints against the Blues Junior.

+1

The smurf-sized OEM box really strangles the potential from this amp.

I recently heard an example wired to a 2 x 10 enclosure stuffed with Emi Copperheads -- the difference was both significant and pleasing. It was very reminiscent of a hand-wired Vox AC15.
