Can anyone tell me anything about this amp? The red knob amp? I believe it is the 1990 version my friend is buying, might be an '88 or '89. Anything you can tell me is very helpful. The one my friend is getting comes with a switchcraft jack from Torres Engineering, 2x Philips 6L6GC tubes, and 2x 12AX7 and 1x12AT7 (reverb). That's all I know. Let me know if it is a good deal for $280 so I can pass along the info.

The head and rackmount version of the Super 60 could be used w/ any of the 4 x 10", 1 x 12", 2 x 12", or 4 x 12" cabs that Fender was producing at the time.
Also available in 1x12 & 2x10 Combo versions. If you can get your hands on a 1x12 combo, it may be the only amp you'll ever need. All the combos I've seen have had RED knobs. The overdrive isn't metal tone (just thought to add this) not sure what
kind of music your friend plays.
Price range from what I have noticed for the combo; $250-$300
so $280 isn't a great deal, but it's within the norm.

hope this helps...

I have a 91 Super 210 combo, red knobs, the whole shot.

It's a back up amp to my Mesa Rectoverb combo now, but it's still a great amp. Not metal, but good for classic dirty tones, though it tends to be a bit muddy. You can EQ some of that out, but it's never been a very clear, focused tone to me, even with several different tubes (and I bought it new in 91).

The reverb and the clean channel are amazing, some of the best anywhere. You have to EQ it different than a Marshall - you can't knock everything up to 10. Like a Boogie, start the knobs at 12:00 and tweak from there.

I'll still use this for some mellow jams, or recording, but it's had it's share of party days and now it's relaxing in semi-retirement.

Not real loud though. The 10" speakers get ugly real quick with volume.

Nice tone though - for what it is. I love the "notch" filter knob too, gets some unique and tasty tones.

I have the Super 60 combo made 1992. It's pretty basic amp and has some serious problems:
- The volume pots are probably not audio tapering and make bedroom level playing difficult.
- The shared EQ is a pain!
- OD channel sounds too crispy and bright, not enough bass and too much +2KHz frequencies. It can be cured somewaht by adding a lot of middle. Changing caps might do the trick too. I would do it if I knew how...
- The amp is damn heavy!

Ok, the good things:
- It's loud and cuts through in a band.
- It likes pedals nicely, my Fulltone OCD sounds good with it.
- The clean channel has that classic Fender sound but it needs volume, a lot of volume.
- It's a good platform for building a P2P mod a la Torres!

I think I'm going to keep it for a while...

The super sixty will probably be remembered as one of the greatest inexspensive amps of all time. I tried one out at a music store by accident and put it on layaway immediatly. Then went home and researched it alittle bit and found out its suposed to be a real gem. And it has been. I paid $200 for a rack mount head. then I had to supply a rack $50 and it needed a footswitch $20 (ebay).new tubes put me at a hair over $300 but I love the amp. I'm the kind of player that can get by on 1 EQ and 2 channels. If I need more I'll run an FX processer. I can summon up marshall and mesa tones quickly and easily. Simplicity is bliss! I've owned this amp a year now, and I'll buy another if I see one again. I swear by every fender product I've ever owned though, so I"m very bias. I think if you buy it and fool around with it awhile you'll be very pleased. I am comfortable walking on stage with this amp and a guitar and nothing else, and that says alot.
