While I do like the SS 22 I'm sure it could be better. I think I'd like a warmer speaker, less ice picky. I'd also like a bit more bass, especially on the burn channel. Many people have recommended the cannabis rex. Any thoughts on this or others?

Sure there's a bunch of noise in this amp. Everyone knows that by now. I think the biggest issue on mine is the noise from the reverb circuit. I'm going to have a look at how the wiring's arranged to see if it can be tidied, but perhaps a change of tubes in the appropriate positions might help this?

Overall I'd like the vintage channel to break up at lower volumes. Is this possible?
The burn channel could do with being a bit smoother.

Any suggestions?

You might find Celestion's V30 a better speaker choice for modern rock tones. Their Gold Alnico model might also be a candidate if you want a more vintage vibe.

Try a 12AY7 in V4. Both the reverb and pre-power amp signal is amplified by this tube. It won't help the clean channel break up sooner, however.

I've just put a cannabis rex in mine. So far it seems to have tamed to ice pick a bit.

Next up are the tubes. Any more suggestions?

As well as less reverb noise, and less breakup on the vintage channel, I wouldn't mind less gain on the burn channel and less overall power. Can this be done?

I really like these 6v6 (they are 6v6 in the SS22, correct?) tubes to thicken tone and increase head room:

And while I am never quite sure if a bias change matters when the amp is turned up loud, you might try biasing the amp colder to get less break up and maybe a perceived lower "power".

Well, the reason I was after less power was because I wanted more break up, at lower volume, at least from the vintage channel. Less pre-amp from the burn channel.

Have you swapped V4 with something other than the 12AX7?

Is it safe to assume that when you say 'ice pick' you are referring to speaker beaming? If so, then you might want to check this out.

Speaker Directivity Mod

Read the first two post to get the idea. Jay Mitchell appears to have done his homework in this area and come of with a dirt cheap solution to speaker beaming. He also insist that Weber's Beam Blocker will not work.

I replaced my tubes on my ss22 with jj's and the speaker to a warehouse reaper 30 and it's quiet and the sound is absolutely awesome no words can explain the sound but I recommend this combo of tube/speaker replacement

You could try a different pair of power tubes that are rated for earlier break up, along with bias adjustments to try and get what you're looking for.
But if you don't know what bias is AND how to SAFELY adjust it, leave that to an amp tech and just tell him what you're trying to get.

Here's something you can easily and safely try.
The SS22's burn channel is a master volume set up, as you know.
You wrote that you wanted earlier break up from the clean channel, but try this on the burn channel. Turn the gains all the way off. Turn the master to around the 3pm position. Now start turning up the first gain control and see if you can get a good tone from balancing between master at higher levels and gain at lower levels.
By driving the master that high and working the pre gain you may get a great tone that's different than driving the pre gain high and master low.

I do this with my Egnater Vengeance and the tone is quite different than running master low and pre gain high. There is more of a power tube distortion and less pre gain tube distortion. Balancing between the controls gets me a great tone.
And the sensitivity gets better too, more like a class A amp.
Give it a try. :)
