Is there a good reason that Fender discontinued the Stage 1600? Why was it configured that you couldn't add another speaker cab without disabling one or both of the existing speakers? I've never had any complaints (other than this) regarding this amp. Also, has anyone ever had any issues with using the XLR line out?

Probably because you and maybe one other person bought the amp. All kidding aside, if it was popular, they would probably still make it.

According to the schematic, there are two speaker jacks, one for the main speaker(s) and one for an external speaker(s). The main speaker is not disabled when plugging in an external speaker.

The Stagee 1600 was the 160 watt version of the Stage 1000. They replaced the Stage 100 and Stage 160. The 100 watt versions and 160 watt versions used the exact same output chips and power supplies - the difference in output was caused by the speaker load. The 100 watt versions had an 8 ohm speaker load while the 160 watt versions had a 4 ohm speaker load. You could add an 8 ohm extension cab to the 100 watt versions in parallel with the internal speaker (combined total 4 ohms) and the power output would increase to 160 watts. But 4 ohms is the minimum impedance for those chips/power supply - you can't add an extension cab to the 160 watt versions unless you change the internal speaker load first. (The 160 watt versions have two 8 ohm speakers in parallel, one plugged into the "main" output jack and the other plugged into the "extension" jack - by unplugging one internal speaker you can then add one 8 ohm extension cab.)

While the theoretical rule with solid state devices is that halving the speaker impedance doubles the power output (or doubling the impedance halves the output), in the real world that's not always exact. If you connected a 16 ohm load to any of those amps the output would drop to about 50 watts, but the chips and power supply run out of steam at 160 watts (so the 100/1000 don't jump all the way to 200 watts when you change their 8 ohm speaker loads to 4 ohm loads).

As for why they discontinued the 1600, there are many possible reasons. They may be getting ready to introduce a new version. Or it just might not have been a big sales success - at that price range, big solid state amps face lots of tube competion.

I believe the new "Champion" line may have replaced both the Stage and Frontman series amps.
