If they are true 5881s, they are only 25 watt tubes (vs 30 watts for a 6L6GC) and may not be able to handle the SR plate voltage.

Who said anything about cryogenically treated tubes?

Anyway, it is a process where tubes are frozen in liquid nitrogen and then thawed out. It is supposed to do magic things to the tube guts. shimmilou and I tried a set of tubes from http://www.cryoset.com/catalog/index.php. I was not impressed.

I've mentioned the Cryo Treated tubes.

After you recommended the JJ 6L6GC's (and I'm looking for a set of 6L6's) the search showed the Cryo Treated ones.

In general, with a true 5881 versus a true 6L6GC --- you'll get a more midrange tone with the 5881. But lose some bass and the crystal clear high notes.

5881s also compresses more, at an earlier volume setting, than a typical 6L6GC. I bias the 5881 to about 14-16 watts, idle dissipation per tube. An NOS Sylvania or Tungsol 5881/6L6WGB can handle 450-475 VDC on the plates, AS LONG AS you keep the dissipation wattage below 20 watts.

The Fender schematic shows the SRRI B+ at 435 VDC. Unfortunately, we're not talking about an NOS tube here and I'm not sure I would trust the reissue, however:
