I'm never buying a used amp again without hearing it first. My Pro Junior (Tweed) came today and no matter what volume or tone I have it set on there is a constant, annoying static noise in the background.

This was supposed to be an amp upgrade for me. It's not.

I don't know where to find the serial number but inside of it there is a Fender sticker that says:

Model "Pro Junior"
Tube locations from left to right at rear
Speaker jack 8 OHMS Min 15W
EL84/6BQ5, EL84/6BQ5, 12Ax7A, 12Ax7A

I know nothing about amps so I don't know what to do. I'm hoping someone can tell me what is causing the problem and how I can fix it.

Thanks

Any chance of returning the amp to the seller?

I'm going to try. But I'm pretty sure the seller's terms said no returns.

I was hoping that there was a cheap fix for this.

Did he disclose that the amp was making weird non-musical noises?

If not, then there's your out. Notify both Ebay and Pay Pal and start the dispute process.

This is everything that the seller wrote to describe the amp.

"Condition:
Used: An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections.

Description:

For auction
Fender pro jr tweed amp
Sounds incredible!
My musician friend just used it and says it is the best sounding little amp he has ever heard,

I believe it has 2- el 84's
And 2-12ax7's"

It looked in great condition in the pictures. I assumed it was going to function properly. I contacted the seller about a return, but seller states returns aren't accepted. I also opened a case with ebay. I'll probably do the same with paypal.

Pay Pal protocols imply a certain measure of protection when the purchased item is not as described in a listing. Make that your next step to resolve the issue.

eBay protects buyers these days a lot better than it protects sellers. You can return pretty much anything if you have a legitimate reason and eBay will back YOU and not the guy you bought the amp from.

Here's what it says in plain sight right on the site:

How does eBay Buyer Protection work?

1 - Contact the seller.

If your item hasn't arrived or isn't as described, let the seller know. Most sellers are happy to quickly resolve issues like these.

Contact the seller if your item hasn't arrived or it isn't as described.

2 - If you need us, we step in.

If after a few days you're not happy with the seller's resolution, we're here to help.

Just go to the Resolution Center and let us know.

3 - We'll work quickly to get your money back

We'll review the issue and get back to you within 48 hours.

If you haven't received your item or received something that wasn't as described, eBay will refund your full purchase price plus original shipping.

What are you waiting for?

I have used this process with e-bay, super fast and super easy. Just tell the resolution center you're not happy and why, they'll take it from there. I found it eezy peezy.

Start your claim/dispute before the seller. If you haven't already.

Seller's feedback tells a lot - check it out.

Good luck!

Found the ad - all good feedback. That Northbrook seller seems to have several hundred (653) good feedbacks, so...

...possibly shipping damage?

"No returns or exchanges, but item is covered by eBay Buyer Protection - opens in a new window or tab."

Never buy from a pawn shop or someone who refers to their "musician friend" and admits they are not a player, or if it's in an estate sale.

Need more info.

How much did you pay? How old is the amp? Is there a chrome plate on the back with a serial? Is the speaker blue?

Could simply be tubes. Could be scratchy pot (Spray them with DeOxit and work them a couple dozen times). Could be very simple.

Could also need a cap job if it's an early 90s version.

I've been through a lot with a used Pro Jr., and it's all worth it. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/amp-central-station/292463-tweed-pro-jr-used-help-me-decipher-mods.html
