Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I have no electrical knowledge. tried researching and ended up more confused than i started.

what the hell is an OHM?!?!

What types of external cabinets can i run with this thing? 2x12? 1x12? im sure the type of speaker has some influence as well.

maybe a step by step break down of how it all works?

Help!!

thanks

Hi mikeydanger,

An "Ohm" is the unit of measure for impedance (resistance). You can use practically any 8 ohm speaker cab with the DRRI, whether it is a 1x12, 2x12, or 4x12, as long as that speaker cab is able to handle the 22 watts of the amp, or more precisely, half of the 22 vwatts, since the internal speaker will get half of the watts. The stock internal speaker in the DRRI is 8 ohms, and when plugging in an external cab of 8 ohms, this makes the total impedance 4 ohms.

Thanks for the reply!!

Question though, if the amp is rated at 8 ohms, and from what I understand of ohms(I may have this wrong) the smaller the number the bigger the resistance, isn't 4ohms more than the amp can handle? Or am I all wrong here?

Well, 4 ohms is less resistance, which can mean more current, except in a tube amp. The DRRI was made to use either an 8 ohm speaker(s) or a 4 ohm speaker(s), they put an external jack in the amp after-all. In a tube amp, the maximum output occurs at a "matched" impedance, and at an impedance higher or lower than matched, the amp will put out less power. Typically, for a tube amp, an impedance mismatch within a two to one ratio is fine, but the sound can be different with different impedance, ie earlier or later breakup.

Using a 16 ohm external cab will give you a total impedance of 5.3 ohms which is a good compromise between 4 and 8 ohms.
