I'd like to see that "drip edge" grille with a velcro mount similiar to some of the older (pre Fender) Sunn amps.

The extruded aluminum molding and the corner pieces are far too delicate for that, MM. Having worked with it many times during the course of restorations, I can tell you it's easily bent or dented as a result of careless handling.

My last Sunn amp was built differently - I see what you're saying though and agree, Arjay. :D

I did like the looks of sans grille.

Can anyone here comment on whether the speakers they're installing in the Silverface reissues are an improvement over the Jensen speakers in the current lineup of Blackface RI's? In the case of the 68 Custom Reissue DR it includes the Celestion® G12V-70. I've never heard of this speaker and it isn't currently listed on the Celestion company website.

Nor I. I think it may be a new model developed specifically for these re-issue amps.

It would be difficult to say without actually trying them in-person. From my understanding Celestions are usually associated with British EL84/34-type amps. That being said many (most?) people are trigger-happy to swap out their stock Italian-made Jensens. Make of that what you will.

That's true for the most part. However, Celestion does manufacture some speakers that defy such a generalization, specifically the "Gold" alnico series and the now OOP "L" models. The former does a pretty good imitation of Jensen's P12NA as used in some vintage tweed Fender's while the latter is sonically close to the old Concert Series C12Q.

I tried a Celestion G12T-75 in a Fender amp just as an experiment some years back and at the time I thought it sounded pretty darned good considering it is known as a Marshall type driver. It was deep, ballsy and chimey .... with perhaps a little too much roll off on the high end but sometimes that's what people want. My Rivera combo came that same driver. I temporarily swapped it out about a year ago for the Celestion Gold Arjay mentioned and I was surprised to find I actually like the G12T-75 better so I put it back in. Mind you I didn't wait long enough to be sure the Gold had broken in. Perhaps I might have kept it in there if I had. The Gold definietly had more definition and clarity on the high end and I think it prolly would have cut through better if I had tried it on stage but it didn't have the same breathy deep woof of the stock driver that I had come to know and love.

The specs seem similar to some of the contemporary Eminence types albeit with a somewhat lower SPL (many of the Emi's top 100 dB).

Could be just the thing for this new line of amps.

I think the higher end new Celestions (even the non-British made ones) are quite good. I really love the sound of the reissue G12M-25 Greenbacks I have in my 4x12 Crate cab that I use with my Wrecking Ball amp.

I think you mean non-English, Bill.
Celestion is based out of Ipswich, Suffolk.
