I was at a local farmers market this morning and there was a guy there with a box of old radio tubes. Among some old 12ax7 and AT7's I found a single lonely Philco 6v6GT in the blue and yellow box for fifty cents! Black getter and in nice shape too. Most of the tubes were between fifty cents and a buck so I bought a few.

I put the Philco 6v6GT in my 74 Champ and was pleasantly surprised when it started glowing. Cool stuff. It's very quiet, no rattles and sounds really nice. The distortion is pure rock and roll when you crank it and has a nice ring when you dial back the guitar. It seems to be a fine replacement for the RCA I had with the rattle. Sounds way better than the JJ I replaced the RCA with. We'll see. So ar so good! Fifty cents well spent!!

Supro, If that 6V6GT has a "stop sign" with 6V6GT on the tube + two letter code... it's an RCA made tube. Could be clear glass or smoked. I like the 1950's vintage smoked ones.

Good catch!

50 Cents?...I don't think he hit any net either! Congrats on the find!

Thanks guys, and I'll look for the stop sign. I was like giddy school kid when I found it. I played the Champ for a couple of hours yesterday. The guy said he may be back next week. If he is, I might make him an offer on the whole box of tubes he as. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't buying duds. Most were for what I assume was radio applications. He had a few RCA, a lot were Philco, but nothing was over a buck. If he comes back, I'll get a tube tester and flip the ones I can't use. Any suggestions on a decent vacuum tube tester?

For the money, I think that it would be hard to beat an Eico 666 or 667. They can be found in good condition for under $200. The only negative that I've found is that the built in tube roll chart has some inaccuracies. Find one with the included tube chart book for more accurate settings. After you get to know how to use it, you won't really need the charts.

Here is a pretty good site about tube testers.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
