As with any vintage amp, be prepared to replace the electrolytic caps, some resistors, and possibly even the tubes. That is, if you get one in decent shape.

Back on the point. An 'old' Deluxe Reverb was suggested. What model year are we talking here???? Would that be the SF??....or....maybe I should go after one of those '64 Custom Vibroverbs one sees on eBay from time to time. Any thoughts??

Prices on the secondary market for a '64 Vibroverb re-issue have been climbing of late -- now approaching two grand.

I paid $1400 for the '68 drip-edge silverface Deluxe Reverb pictured. All original, including the black-enameled footswitch and Victoria Luggage amp cover (I installed the JBL D120F speaker after it was delivered). The amp was built in January so it's the AB763 circuit revision -- blackface through and through.

Hi Arjay, is it possible that later drip-edge amps contained non-BF circuits?

Yes.

In the case of the Deluxe Reverb, in August of 1968 the circuit was changed to the AB868 revision. Not much was tampered with but there were some alterations, electronically. However the cosmetics remained the same.

Dittos with the drip-edge silverface Super Reverb. In May of 1968 that amp was "improved" from the original AB763 circuit to the AB568 layout. This revision literally sucked the tone from the amp. And like the DR, the cosmetics were untouched.

Virtually all of the initial drip-edge silverface models retained their original blackface circuitry until mid-year 1968, when CBS's "diddling" began.

With no letters on the sticker its hard to determine month of the production (online sales at least ..).

The truly dedicated know how to determine the age of a vintage Fender amp absent a date stamp on the tube chart.

And you can't trust that the sticker has the correct circuit listed either. My Bassman says "AB165" but turns out that it is actually an "AC568". :(

+1

FMI continued to use the older charts until the supply was exhausted. When new charts were finally printed, no mention at all was made of the circuit revision -- merely a generic layout showing tube locations only. This *seems* to coincide with the end of the 1969 model year though exceptions remain a possibility.
