Bluesky, very interesting. BTW... the Gold Lion B759 has spiral wound heater wires. This tube takes awhile to break-in. That's the one thing about the Russian made mil spec or near mil spec tubes -- they take awhile to break-in. Unlike a lot of US made NOS which usually have end-tone, right out of the box.

With an accomplice.

Had a chance to take in a good portion of the article. I will be interesting to keep an eye on the Northern Electric brand. The internet doesn't leave much room letting quality slip without anybody noticing it for awhile. Especially with Les Rose on the case.

Thanks for the posting, Bill.

You're welcome.

I haven't had the chance to read it all myself.

Bluesky, change in tone over time. Many russian mil spec tube seem to change their tone in the first month or so. Usual initial impression is a "tight" tone --- that gets a warmer midrange response with a little time.

Why sometimes initial impressions are not that good. IME.

Tubes can break in? Had no idea, maybe that is why my refurbed Bantam with the Sovtek 5881's is sounding better?

By the way, thanks for all that great information there BlueSky! Just takes a while to digest it all!

+1

I had some Winged C's like that years ago. A bit clinical-sounding when new, over the course of a few months (and several idle-bias tweaks) they sweetened up significantly.

I can understand speakers breaking in as there is a mechanical suspension that needs to physically loosen up. However, I don't understand what the mechanism would be for tubes to break in. Certainly changing bias as tubes age will change the tone, but what else is there? What happens physically in a tube that would constitute "break in"?

Perhaps something happening to the metal innards after a while of heating and cooling? I'm far from an expert, but possibly after a while the expansion and contraction from the heating and cooling could have an effect?

Came across this...may be worth a read...I have not much time now, but looks to be a cool book.
