I want a good basic tube amp and am looking at the Fender Blues Deluxe, Hot Rod Deluxe, and even the Blues Jr. I'm also looking at a Peavey Valveking. A few people have recommeded the Line 6 Spider Valve. On the surface, it seems to offer the best of both worlds - a true tube amp coupled with modeling capabilities. What's the downside versus on of the basic amps mentioned? Is it really more gimmick than substance? Is it more likely to break down? I'd really appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

really depends on what you plan to do with it and to a greater degree what you expect out of it.

I tried all of those single speaker small amps and just could never get the make ya want to cry tone I was looking for, they just dont have what it takes to go where I wanted them to.

For me the final stop on my quest for tone without going broke landed me with a Blues Deville 4x10, it is a 1993 made in the U.S.A. model that does what I want and more.

But hey the voyage to get there was fun and if you dont mind buying and selling a few amps to get "THE SOUND" your looking for, its worth it.

the fun thing is that I get to keep trying out other stuff just incase I missed a Jewel out there !!!!!

Good Luck on Your search

All of those amps you just mentioned are all completely different amps. Don't ask us for our opinion, try the amps out and form your own opinion. Have you tried any of them?

Thanks for the responses. I was not clear. I know I need to play through of them, and I'm doing that. My question is, is there a downside to the Line 6 concept combining digital modeling with a tube amp? Does it make the amp less reliable, does it in some way undercut the qualities of a more traditional tube amp (I know this is very subjective), is it a gimmick or is it (personal tone tastes aside) a good quality amp on par with the others I mentioned.

As an owner of many Line 6 products I would be very hesitant to buy a Spider Valve. I've had many issues with their software based products (POD, POD XTLive) and if it malfunctions on the Spider Valve you're left with an amp that's not operational.

I love the tones I can get with my XTLive plugged straight into a Champion 600 but the XTLive has been in for service work twice in the first year I owned it. Can't say I would trust it in a live situation without a back up rig.

Again, this is my opinion and it's based on my individual experiences with Line 6 products.
