I can't decide between the two! I am mainly a bedroom player but about once a week jam with some friends in a full band. I am worried that the 40 watts of the HRD will be too much. What is keeping me from the DRRI is the price. I beleive it would be the perfect amp for me esp. once I could get a nice ext. cab for it but it is so expensive and hard to find used. The HRD and the devilles go for half that price but I always read about how loud they are.. Should I just take the hit and finally get an awesome amp? Or go the affordable route and still have a good amp but always want something else? I think I answred my own question though..

The DR is one of the best amplifiers ever made and the reissues ain't too bad either. If it's the sound you want , go for it .[still too loud for the bed room though ;^)].

The Hot Rod/Blues range are different animals altogther. The cascaded overdrive sounds make them more versatile at lower levels but they too sound at their best cranked in clean mode . A different but equally viable sound.

Either is fine for small/medium sized gigs.

Man there are DRRIs on ebay all the time. Plus I am sure there will be one for sale on the classifieds over at thegearpage.net Give them a check and see. You should be able to grab a MINT DRRI for around $700 shipped. I have both amps and love them both. The HRD is a more modern amp that I can get some good Pink Floyd type tones with but the DRRI is my go to for SRV type stuff or just classic rock in general. The DRRI is the better amp IMHO.

I agree with the previous person's post, with the addendum that the difference in price between the two amps you've mentioned is minuscule, assuming you plan on playing the thing regularly and will be using it for years. Fender amps seem to last forever, especially if well cared for, and it is part of the instrument that is an electric guitar. So get what sounds best to you, you'll have it for some time. If you settle for a cheaper option, you may find yourself needing to unload the amp at a loss and still paying that much more for what you really want.

I just bought a Blues Deluxe RI, which seems to be similar to the Hot Rod Deluxe in regards to volume. It is loud, but quite good sounding at lower volumes, clean. Nearly everyone uses some sort of pedal for distortion, so in regards to the drive channel on a HRDx or getting the DRRI to break-up, either way you will be looking at some serious volume.

Just my two cents, and I'm truly a hobbyist with limited knowledge. Good luck to you.
