Solution discovery:

Trying preamp tubes in V1. The replacement I was using before also had a problem! Trying a third and fourth in V1 solved it.

Started reading your thread. It's cool.

I have:

V1 - 5751 JAN PHILIPS
V2 - 12AX7 Tung-Sol
V3 - Mullard 12AT7WA (CV4024)
Power - JJ 6L6 GC

The Tung-sols are actually cool because they are good value for money and they make the amp wild - with feedback on tap; which I like. The 5751 is sooooo clear, but doesn't reduce the gain a huge amount in my experience, although the discernible reduction is welcome. And yeh, the 12AT7 is supposed to be good as a PI. It seems to contribute an added clarity too.

My speaker is a Jensen C12N - I haven't read your post about speakers yet!

Glad to hear your problem is solved. Simple solutions are the best. There's a lot of stuff in my BDRI mod thread. Hope you enjoy it. :D

Argh! The first ribbon is causing some sort of issue when I put the back cover on again. Or it could be the pre in V1 but unlikely. It's not there without the back cover or with the cover the wrong way around. It's a crackling type of noise, like a broken lead basically (but not), that can be heard when touching the ribbon and which diminishes when touching the chassis at the same time with the other hand.

The back cover is lined with some sort of foil on the inside - not sure if it's stock. What's best? Is it a grounding thing? Should I cut it off (the shielding) with a knife that side?

Note the ribbons are now bent in inwards as advised and also V1 is missing a 'Fender snap-in tube shield' which is impossible to source in-stock.

I realise I'm asking a lot since I joined so thanks.

The foil is shielding material. When the back is installed, the foil contacts the chassis and acts as a shield against noise. It came stock in my BDRI and I installed it in my 5F6A clone and Wrecking Ball amp.

The noise could just be interference caused by body capacitance. Or a bad solder joint/wire.

Maybe it's because I didn't screw it in at all I'll check tomorrow but it's definitely the back cover that triggers the problem!

sidepartings26, be sure the back is securely contacting the chassis when you put it onto the amp. Maybe try a thin flat washer between the back and the chassis, through the assembly screw?

I'm posting here to throw my hat in the ring, because I have a problem with my '93 Blues Deluxe, and it sounds like exactly the same issue. The amp has TONS of reverb, I know that people say the BD reverb is weak. This one seems the opposite. I cannot turn it up past 4, though with out getting high, screaming feedback.

I tried a different reverb pan, and there is no feedback, but also very weak, limited reverb. The pan is a Accutronics 4AB3C1B Reverb Tank.

I will try some of the things mentioned heretofore in this thread regarding lead dress and ribbon cable orientation, and report back!
