I traded for this a while back, know about the attenuator problems ( it has never cut out on me) , and was not expecting alot. Wrong! This little amp can sound very clean and sweet, and can be nasty an hell!!! I have tried to tell my self that I need a better / bigger / newer / louder amp. but I always come back to this amp.

It loves the Hwy. 1 Tele, Amer. std. HSS Strat, and the Les Paul Special.

Power Tubes went out last week, put GT 6V6 Red Med. Duet set in, and the amp sounded better than ever.

Pre amp 12A7T went out this week, put in a GT Silver 12AT7, and the amp just screamed at both clean and dirty.

I don't think this amp is ever going to let me move on to something else.
If I don't need to buy another guitar, and don't need another amp, what the hell am I going to buy now???

thanks for letting a forum newbie on here!

Nobody *needs* to buy another guitar or another amp.

We merely want to.

Do you still have the stock speaker in it or other?

Everything is standard, It has the 10” Jensen C-10R that came with it. I matched the tubes as close as possible, Russian made.

I have never played through a vintage Princeton, I wonder if they sound this good?

Lyndon Baines Johnson was the president of the United States when my Princeton Reverb was made.

I wouldn't trade it for ten Princeton Recording Amps.

That give you an idea of how they sound?

I can be as light as I wish. Mostly it's my profligate-and-sedentary lifestyle that makes me heavy.

All kidding aside, the Princeton Recording Amp *can* be a pretty useful tool. I've never owned or played one but I have heard them and know one tasteful player who uses his quite extensively for studio session work. His is capable of some relatively vintage tone, doubly so after he replaced his OEM speaker with a hemp-cone alnico Tone Tubby. I think he disabled the power-brake feature after it caused some initial problems and I do recollect him mentioning that the on-board compressor effect wasn't as versatile as a stand-alone unit. But his is nearly decade old now and is still delivering the goods. Played side-by-side with my '65 Princeton Reverb, the recording version gives a pretty good account of itself whenever we jam together. His guitar is a '57 AVRI Strat with Kinman noiseless pickups and his stage rig is a '62 brownface Concert Amp (also with Tone Tubby's). His tone is very similar with either amp.

Aren't profligate and sedentary somewhat mutually exclusive terms?

Thanks for the feed back on the amp. I looked online for a vintage Princeton, there are a few available. When I get some xtra bucks, I will pop for one.

thanks

I used a Princeton Recording amp when I was recording with a friend of mine kin his studio. He owned it, not me. He also had problems with the attenuator, so he asked me not to mess with it. The amp was okay, not really the "Real Vintage" tone that I liked with the original Blackface versions. Not bad, just not to my liking. I didn't find it real responsive to my playing style. I think Arjay hit the nail on the head with the stock speaker not being all that great.

I don't think anyone labors under the illusion that an import C10R sounds anything like a real Jensen.

Yep, just another way of "improving" an amp that didn't need improving in the first place.

Indeed.

Thousands upon thousands of old coots who own and play vintage Princeton Reverbs can't all be wrong.

Yep. Whatever happened to the "Vintage Molested Series" Like the VM Bandmaster and Deluxe? :?: That was another disappointment.

Hi Martin

I recently got a Princeton Recording Amp and I'm loving mine too. You mention that you changed out the Power Tubes in your amp and I was wondering if you could describe the process for me (this is my 1st valve amp in 25yrs and so I'm a bit nervous about screwing something up!).

When you installed the new valves did you have to bias them or did you just put in a matched pair? Any info you can pass on will be gratefully received. I have been looking around on-line for info re biasing (what is it, how do you do it etc.) but without much luck so far. Thanks.

simonSP,

Whenever you change the output tubes, whether "matched" or not, you should check the idle bias. I am not sure that the Princeton Recording Amp has an adjustable bias pot --- as the BF and SF models do not.

Good luck with your amp.
