Tonight I turned on my '600 after little use for the past few months. A loud crack! ensued and then continuous static and crackle. Sounds like an AM radio in the rain. The volume was turned all the way down to zero at start up. The noise did not affect volume or tone, but never went away. I got the static sound with and without the instrument plugged in. Played through it for about 45 minutes, no change.

The amp is about a year old. Any thoughts? I am going to drop it back to the vendor tomorrow.

If it doesn't have a power tube in the circuit...I'm not that interested

Returning under warranty is the best choice. Fender will simply replace the amp as they are not repairable under warranty.

Or, replace the preamp tube which is the likely culprit, possibly the output tube. Static and crackle is a typical sign of a faulty tube.

+1

It's certainly worth the effort. Even if it turns out to be non-tube related, these little guys are pretty simple to repair for someone familiar with the circuit and willing to spend the time. There's only about twenty parts on the chassis.

Thanks everyone. From the wisdom gathered here, I am thinking it is the pre-amp tube, but I'll get it looked at under warranty first. The little guy was probably scared of the '65 Bandmaster that's waiting to come home from the same location and just crapped himself.

Tubes are only warranteed for 90 days, so you may as well change it yourself and avoid the service charges. If it is not the tubes, Fender will just replace the amp.

The issue was the output tube. Replaced with a Groove Tube 6V6GT. The technician also reduced the power and bias on the tube. He said that Fender has these tubes running very "hot" leading to early failure, so he replaced a couple of resistors to drop the power (a 1K ohm 2Watt, and a 510 ohm, 5 Watt) not really sure where in the circuit.

My WAG would be the 1K-ohm, 2 watt replaced the 470-ohm, 2 watt (R26) on the screen. And the 510-ohm, 5 watt replaced the cathode resistor on the 6V6GT (R10).
