I've thought lately about buying a used PRRI so I figured I'd check the going rate on ebay and was surprised to see so many old and reissue's at any given time for sale. There are so many positive reviews on these that it would seem like they should be hard to come by. I do realize some may be over financial issues and also that so many have been made over the years so maybe that's the only reason they appear. I'd like a nice little amp but want to be sure since so many are for resale.

I think you see a lot of vintage stuff for sale because people hope to get a profit on an amp they may have got for a good deal. A lot of people flip gear too.

As far as the RI is concerned my biggest complaint is the rattle. Anything above 5 and I feel the amp would self destruct. :!:

It's a nice amp but the rattle is the main reason I haven't bought one yet. YMMV.

Most likely, many of them have been sold. That said, there's usually fallout from buyers who don't bond with them.

Lots of Strats on there too - - same scenario.

This issue has taken the shine off of what would've otherwise been an outstanding grab-and-go amp but the same problem has tarnished the reputation for all of the re-issue models to some extent, save for the 5F6 Bassman. Coupled with the poor soldering, marginal OEM tubes, and near-constant "tinkering" to keep these amps legal for sale in Europe, it all coalesces into a confluence of aggravating user problems.

What I found out the hard way is it's not a great gigging amp unless you run an efficient extension cab or play with a seriously professional drummer. I believe Arjay turned one into a head pushing some serious air. That's the way to do it. I do a similar thing with my old Champ. In its stock form as good as it sounded, it just didn't cut it in a band situation if your stage volume isn't seriously under control. The old Princeton's are amazing recording amps. The reissues have too many issues. They were also priced pretty high. For not much more you could get a DR.

I read that Fender fixed the rattle with a glued strip of wood on the baffle. I just want it for bedroom practice use ( I have a DRRI for louder use) so if it hits the sweetspot without rattle issues then I'll be happy.

Well I tried one out in a room at GC where I was able to crank it up and it still rattled. I have tried 3 or 4 and haven't had a problem BELOW 4-5 so YMMV.

Man that's a shame. The originals didn't do that at all. The one I had in the 70's didn't rattle at all no matter what I did to it.

Nor does my original from November of 1965.

I wish I kept all those old amps I sold.
It sucked being broke even for a little while. Divorce and child support will do that to you. Wish I would have met the woman I have now first instead of the one I got rid of. I'd have a pretty nice collection of amps. I'm building another collection, literally! With my own two hands.
