Just a question for yo tube experts, I have a B/D and I am getting some crackle out of her when I start her up, I noticed the power tubes get a slight blue flash when it makes the noise, is it time to replace ???

if I get a matched pair will I need to Bias ???

any suggestions other than what Fender has to offer ????

THanks

so not a soul here with any tube life span experience ??? or even a replacement suggestion ???

seems like the old tech guys stayed on at the old and should be departed FDP, sure do wish they would come visit us and grace us with their expert thoughts on such matters.

wouldnt be so bad, but the other forum is run by a tyrrant with his goons that are just not nice !!!

Depending on how long it was since the tubes were changed, how often you play and how hard you drive the tubes. It could possibly be time for a change. While the amp is on, tap one of the tubes (LIGHTLY) and see if you hear any noises coming from the amp, that's a good way to check if tubes are about to go south.

And if this amp has never had its bias checked since 1993, you might want to take it to somebody and have it checked, it could've drifted off some.

Bottom line, just take it to somebody and have them look it over.

Thanks for the reply, It just seemed odd when the tube flashed over like that every time the static sound occured, no doubt the two are related.

I have a tech in the area.

The guy I bought the amp from said his tech installed a bias pot in the amp and so I would guess it will help to get the job done.

I just dont want to loose any of that so sweet tone this amp has !!!!!!

Getting a bias trim pot added would be a good idea. The current factory production has this useful little mod.
It will both widen the range of suitable tubes and provide some fine tuning of the sound when they're fitted.
You can just plug and hope with power tubes in a fixed bias amp [that's what they did in the old days ;^) ] but with such a great number of differring tubes [from a multitude of sources] on the market these days, it's increasingly not a good idea.
