You might also take a drive into Auburn and ask Larry at Encore Music Center what he recommends. He's an old hand, being a founding member of Sacramento's iconic Rutabaga Boogie Band. He knows tone.

WOW! That just jarred the old memory banks...I haven't thought about or heard the name Rutabaga Boogie Band in forever. I've been to Encore Music a few times and have probably bought picks and strings from Larry. Next time I'm there, we'll talk tone.

Hello, I am wondering what you ended up thinking about the amp? Do you like it? How does it sound???? Someone in my area is selling one on CL for $600. Is that a good deal?

He says: "it's a "Fender Pro Reverb" tube amplifier, with foot switch, dust cover, and extra 12AX7 electro-harmonix tube. 50 watts; 1 x 12" Jensen speaker. It's not the "vintage" amp. It's the black face re-issue. Nevertheless it sounds great, packs a good wallop for its 1 x 12" size, and has that nice Fender tube natural distortion. Hardly used. Selling because I have no time to enjoy it."

I emailed him to ask him about it and all he said was this:

"I think these amps were made by Fender to meet a renewed interest in its classic tube sound, without duplicating its famous "Twin" series and associated cost. I bought mine in 2003/2004, but the "Pro" series has since been discontinued. This model is only a little lighter than a Twin, but significantly less in cost."

There you have it. Any thoughts?

Is this a good amp for someone w/only 2 years of experience??? I've been playing through a Fender Mustang I (v.1) - so it would be quite a HUGE jump up for me... is it completely overkill for a 15x12 home office/bedroom? I'm not looking to gig with it... looking to invest in something that would meet me needs for my brand new MiM 2013 Fender Deluxe Lone Star Strat - and the Mustang I ain't quite cutting the mustard if you know what I mean.

I'll probably end up annoying the s**t out of the neighbors, but hopefully I can get some kick $@! sounds out of it. I don't own any pedals and don't really want to invest in a bunch of pedals to get different sounds... I'd like a versatile amp that sounds good w/out pedals.

So, would I be better off w/a solid state modelling amp? Maybe the Mustang III or IV (v2)? Or perhaps one of the hybrid amps out there that are both a tube amp and a modelling amp - maybe something like the VT80 Plus???

Anyone??

Why not take that short drive and look it over? Bring your guitar and really wring the amp out. If it sounds promising, offer five bills and see what happens. These amps were built pretty solidly and will likely outlast a contemporary model.
