Hey, Ryan.

You'll be interested to know that I have just discovered that my Blues Deluxe Reissue has developed a similar issue as your amp. No where near as loud, though. The "putt-putt-putt" is barely noticeable with the clean volume turned all the way up, but is noticeable (but not as loud as in that You Tube demo) with the master up all the way and the drive control dimed. I'll let you know what I find unless you find a solution first. :D

No, but what found was interesting.

When I put the amp up on my test bench, and turned it on, there was no motorboating in either the lean or drive channel. So I pulled V1 (NOS JAN 12AY70, cleaned the pins and stuck it back in. Still no motorboating. I then pulled that tube and put a EH 12AY7 in V1 (after cleaning the pins) and the amp began to motor boat. So I pulled that tube and installed a second NOS JAN 12AY7 in V1 after cleaning the pins, and that didn't motorboat! In went the original NOS JAN 12AY7 and no motorboating. Put the EH 12AY7 in a second time and the motorboating was back. But I noticed that if I pressed on the EH, the motorboating stopped. I examined the soldering on the pins, and they are solid. I can puch up hard on the tube and there is no sign of a loose solder joint. I pulled the EH and put the original 12AY7 back in and the amp has been running for the last 15 minutes with both the master and drive control wide open. The only thing I can figure is that my amps have been moved around a couple of times over the past few weeks as the interior of the house was painted and then the carpets cleaned. maybe things loosened up a little and cleaning and reseating the tubes was all that was needed. The EH 12AY7 has always been a little loose in V1 (or the NOS JAN 12AY7s have slightly bigger pins that fit tighter and have open up the socket a little) and that caused it to immediately motorboat.

At this point I am going to close the amp back up and just watch and listen while I play over the next few days. If it acts up again, I'll start my own thread rather than hi-jack Ryan's.

Edit: I found the problem.

You were almost right shimmilou.

I plugged the amp back into my Furman and it immediately started motorboating as soon as I turned it on. I then realized that my new, high powered wireless router (Amped Wireless with a 600 mW radio) sits right next to the BDRI on a small table. I unplugged the Ethernet cable which made no difference. I then unplugged the power cable to the router. The amp immediately stopped motorboating! Even though they are on different circuits and the amp is plugged into the Furman, the RF from the router was obviously getting into V1 and causing noise/oscillations. If I move the router by a couple of feet the noise stops. Guess I have to find a new location for the router.

Edit: Moved the wireless router well away from my amps and workbench (about 10 feet) and the BDRI is dead quiet now. Hope Ryan is as lucky in finding his solution, but this may be something to think about.

Bill - So amazing! How coincidental is that? I still havent had time to look at mine, but I am going to change R78/79 anyway because the board is like DARK GREEN / ALMOST BLACK because of the Heat from the ceramics. If they aint bad now, I know they could be real soon.

I'll be looking for your thread to see how you turn out

See post above yours.

I moved the router.

No more noise.

Problem solved.

No new thread.

So I finally had enough time (a month later) to do a "whole" go though on this amp (17 Years Old) I might add. I figured it would probably just add to its life span.

1) Changed out the 47Uf Caps and the smaller 22's
2) Replaced R78 & R79 (had to use a jumper on one due to the pad being burnt off)
3) Re-flowed channel switching button and some other loose solder joints.
4) Net set of Svetlanas and Pre's

MAYBE $60 IN PARTS......AND LOTS OF TIME

AMAZING HOW OLD FILTER CAPS KILL TONE!

You had a bad filter cap after-all, good job.
