I have the Fender Machete head and was wondering what the v1,v2,v3,v4 tubes do in the gain stage on this amp? I think the v1 tube is for the gain clean channel and the v2,v3,v4 are for the overdrive channels. Can someone help me with the tube staging.

Hi
From what I can tell (I could not find schematic), channel 1 & 2 are identical except for the fact that 1 has a high frequency boost switch and high gain push-pull switch.

Knowing each valve has 2 pre-amps, I would assume that:
V1 is the primary pre-amp for Channel 1&2
V2 & V3 is high gain stage for Channel 1
V4 is secondary gain stage channel 2 and Summing stage.
(Summing - mixes all chanels and digital reverb to one signal)
V5 is effects loop send/return pre-amps
V6 is phase inverter for power tubes V7/V8.

This does not feel correct, but without a schematic it is an educated GUESS.

If tubes are 12AX7 , these give max gain. 12AT7 and 12AU7 have less gain.

You can use any of these tube .

What do you want ? More or less drive ?

E-mail consumerrelations@fender.com. If they have a schematic they will e-mail a PDF back to you.
