This is a long story, so bear with me.

I have this old Marshall MG30DFX lying around, and it's sole purpose is to amplify my backing tracks with its CD input so that I can play along to them with my guitar. I can control the volume of my backing tracks on my computer, so that my computer's volume control controls the volume that comes out of the speakers. I set my computer's volume to max, so that the tracks are as loud as possible. When I play along, I set my BJ's master volume to 3.5, with preamp at max. And it's still not loud enough.

I've heard of people playing gigs with their volume set to 3! That's impossible in my situation. Is there something wrong with my amp, or am I setting the backing track volume too high?

Sorry for the double post...But I have some new information about my BJ.

So I've talked to my brother, who lives with us now (usually he's at uni) and he says that my BJ is SO loud, and I am in fact playing at gigging volume. Like, he said that when I'm jamming along to my backing tracks, he can't hear the tracks. He can only hear me. Which is weird, because in my position, it's the other way around! What does this mean?

Turn your BJr volume (gain) down to 4 and turn the Master Volume up. You are overdriving and saturating the preamp tubes the way you have it set now and the master is keeping the overall volume down low. Reverse your settings and the BJr will be more than loud enough.

It means you need to change positions.

This is the way to go. Lets the BJ "breathe".

Get an amp stand and aim the amp at your head.
Seriously, when your stand near a small amp on the floor your in the worst possible position to hear what's coming out of it.
You may also reevaluate your tone when you can hear it better.

I love this simple item. I have a pro line stand too, but would gladly trade it for another one of these.
