Just bought a used Fender Blues Jr. amp. Should be delivered in 3 or 4 days. Would appreciate any suggestions on where to set the controls for some at-home blues tunes. Give me a basic preliminary setting and I can tweak it from there. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Preliminary settings? Set everything to "6".

So, if there is a midrange knob the setting will be 666.
Now I'm scared.

Six more posts, from my current post number, will put me right there. Did you know that the letters f,o and x are all sixes in Pythagorean numerology? Just some useless trivia.

And if you turn your underdrawers inside out you can wear them for an additional six days.

If you are able to play it fairly loudly in your neighbourhood, my settings are bass 5 mid 6 treb 6 master volume full open, preamp at 2. I disconnect the reverb tank cause it bleeds a little.

I play an HSS config guitar and the blues junior really open up with these settings. The "secret" is keeping the master volume full open so you can push the power tubes a little.

Hate to break this to you, but with the master wide open and gain set to only two, you are not going to be pushing the power tubes that much.

How would I determine that? It certainly sounds very angry, not at all clean. Perhaps my gain stage in my pedal board is pushing it? But it's seriously crunchy at those settings?

May also be the resonance filter mod I did. But I can't see why...

Anyway, even before the mod, the trick still seemed to be to keep the master volume full open.

The only way to get power tube distortion is to turn both the master and gain control up high. You need enough signal to drive the phase inverter and power tubes into saturation. If you have a gain stage on your pedal board, you are overdriving the first preamp stage. Turn that off and turn up the amp gain control. It will be loud .

Man, I gotta get one of those BJrs with a gain knob, mine doesn't have one.

Seriously, with the master maxed, the preamp stays clean until you start cranking up the volume. So, to get preamp distortion at lower sound levels, max the volume and keep the master low. The volume pushes the preamp, and the master sets the output level of the preamp. The output tubes will easily distort at medium to high volumes, simply because they are biased so hot from the factory.

Ohhhhh... Ok. Sorry I also had a bias mod installed.

I guess I'm not really playing a stock BJ anymore.

Can't take my preamp to 3 it's far too saturated.

Sorry for all the useless info. Laters!

Not useless at all, just a healthy discussion.

Mine has a bias pot also, a great mod allowing a little more clean volume without losing anything important. 8)

I've just gotten into the habit of referring to what many call the "volume" control as the "gain" control on a master volume amp to avoid confusion with the master volume control.

Yeah, I really like the way my BJ sounds, I've never played a stock one, so I don't know what to expect really. Did I mention it's a Texas Red? So it's loaded with a V30 too. I guess I really am offering settings that only suit me.

Still, glad to be having the chat.

I also get the best tone out of mine by maxing out the master and then controlling the volume via the input gain. This gives it a nice aggressive sound.
I also use the lowest rated groove tubes I can find for the power tubes (for early breakup)
If you like a lot of distortion, this won't get you in that territory, but it sound great.
