I'm kinda late, but yes, and yes! No harm in testing while the SGRs are open, and the higher wattage SGRs are better IMO. Good job dude, and nice score on the amp. IIRC, you said that you couldn't find a good tech in your area........you can't exactly say that anymore (look in the mirror). :)

Thanks My friend !!!
There is no sweeter sound than an easily fixed top of the line (mass produced) amp !

That Jensen P12Q is most definitely a very different flavor for a DRRI !

Had that bad boy that far apart and forgot to clip the bright cap
no big deal, sounds Very sweet, I have been without Reverb for so long that it sounds kinda funky to me.

If you include two 12AT7's (the guy had X7's in v-3 & v-6) an old used pair of Sylvania 6V6GT's and two resistors, I had about 40 to 50 in parts to get her back up and singing.

I threw away the JJ's that most likely started the issue (one was shorted)
Yes the guy must have swapped tubes and burned up both Screen resistors.

Sorry to hijack this thread  I'll go now LOL !

Instead of thinking of it as a hijacking, think of it as a nice testimonial to help assuage the fear of buying a Fender amp, which is right on topic.

I will say that it seems as if the Screen Resistors are a fairly common problem with DRRI's of the last few years.
According to several sources, cheap Russian tubes are shorting out and burning up the Resistors.
So hopefully we will have spared someone else a lot of frustration !!!
Other than the pain of lifting the board its an easy fix.

NOS and good current production 6V6's will solve most of the problems !

Chris,

I've heard to ppl going to 1k-ohm, 5-watt wire wound resistors for the screen grid. WW are very stable under heat and the extra resistance drops the voltage on the screen a bit more --- (about 10VDC versus 470-ohm 5VDC). Theoretically, keeping the output tubes more stable.

But, it may effect the tone. Jerry's SR has 1k-ohm sandbox ww resistors on the screens. And the tone is very close to my SFSR. My amp has metal oxide "flame-proof" 470-ohm, 2 watt resistors on the screen. FWIW....

Cool... TAD's seem to be the only new production rectifiers, worth buying. But, if you can find one of those Phillips mis-labled 5V4(actually 5AR4-GZ34), that Beemer talked about. It would probably be a "lifer" for your amp. For sure, my guys have the 2watt metal oxide 470's. I've used the 1.5K 2watters in Marshalls with good results.JMO, Art

+1 on using higher ohm value SGRs.

I didn't notice much, if any, tone difference going from 470 ohm to 1K ohm. I have used as high as 2K ohm before I get a noticeable and pleasant change in tone, not a huge difference though.

Being board mounted I'm not sure how important it was to use Metal Oxide, but its what I had for the several Bassman heads I went through in the mega thread in Vintage amps.

So the big question seems to be, what are the best sounding and most reliable 6V6GT's out there ???? I still have several pairs of Vintage glass, however I could still use a good alternative as could all the tone junkies still out there.

My favorite New production had been the Tung-Sol Reissue stuff, I'm still using some 6L6GC and the EL34B in my Traynor, but their was some serious issues with their 6V6's
JJ's well there seems to be a lot of tube failures reported so...........
TAD has been reliable for me.
What do you guys think ? decent reliable vintage glass is going to run out some day

Now for the sad part of this deal.

I had contacted Fender to see about transferring the warranty, the amp is a 2012 and so it would have been far less than the Five year so called transferable warranty.
I was told by customer service that it would require that I furnish them with the original sales receipt for this amp.

Really Fender ??? what a scam !!!

Funny Egnater never skipped a beat when I needed service on an amp that I was completely honest with them had been purchased used, what was most important to them was standing behind their product ! They worked with me to keep costs down and allowed me to ship just the chassis, repaired the amp and sent it back, the tubes were broken in transit back to me and Egnater sent me a full set on new tubes (((That is Customer SERVICE ))) !!!!!!

As it turned out I was able to fix this Fender myself.

Who do you suppose I would consider purchasing a new amp from ?

Those are the rules and the conditions for service are clearly spelled out under the terms and provisions set forth on the warranty page of the owner's manual.

It's been that way ever since the transferrable 5-year warranty was introduced some fifteen years ago.

Yep sure is
and its a great way for them to keep from standing behind products they built.
Hopefully folks read the fine print ( I had to get out reading glasses to read it on the hang tag) and save their receipts.
How many people have received the original receipt when buying a used amp ?
Then the sales person also needed to write the amps serial # on said receipt for it to be useful in Fenders warranty.

Come on ARJAY ya really think this is anything more than a way to get out of taking care of your customers ???
