Hi all. I ve had a new TRRI for around 6 months now and suspect I may have an issue.
Firstly, i will say that the amp performs well with no unwanted noises, hiss or crackles and has been totally reliable. My question relates to the volume taper.
After reading much about the volume on these being obscenely loud at 2-3 on the dial, I am a bit bemused with my amp as I can comfortably have mine at 4 on either channel and talk normally whilst indoors. And in studio/gig situations I am at between 5-6? The amp has been like this from new.
This seems quite contrary to all ive read about these amps and I ve no where locally where there is one in stock that I can try and compare it against.
Around the 5-6 the volume taper gets very very sensitive and volume ramps up very quickly to massive volume jump. Is this right? Or maybe a design change to the taper of the volume pot?

Secondly. Im after some alternative speakers to just tame the brittle highs whilst retaining the clarity, and to tighten up the bottom end. Ive always been a fan of the Weber 12f150's and liked them in other Fender tweed amps ive had. But not sure how they work with a blackface amp. Also heard good things about Texas Heats in Twins, and they don't hurt the pocket as much as Webers here in the UK.

Thanks for your help and suggestions in advance.

Is the volume swell (both up and down) identical in both channels?

If so, the amp is likely performing as designed. If not, it's possible the problematic channel has an incorrect pot installed or said pot is defective.

Yes. Both channels are identical in volume rise/fall characteristics.

If your amp has an issue, it's not with the volume controls.

An idle-bias adjustment to optimize the power tubes might smooth out the power curve as you transition through the volume range. Factory settings for the bias circuit are deliberately adjusted low to extend the life of the power tubes.

Cheers Arjay

Are these as easy to adjust the bias on as a Hot Rod series amp?
I tinkered a fair bit with my old BDRI, but I'm suspecting the TRRI is a bit more involved to set the bias on.
