What ever the 1st tube next to the power tubes is, is what I changed. when ever I would tap it, it rattled like the reverb. That is why I thought it went to the reverb. :D . At 53 I am tired of TV, so this is a good way to pass the time. I have found out, I am sure not a very good singer either. :( but I have lots of fun, to me that's the best part. But it is not all bad, at least I am not tone deaf. Tom. :)

Thank you, so I would guess going away from power tubes goes V1 V2 V3? Tom. :) That's backwards. I mean 3 2 1.

Looking at the back of the amp, V1 is the right most tube.

I have a older USA Hot Rod Deluxe, will look up the year again. I like the link above for modding this amp. I am wondering if changing the volume knob will make it easier to sit in a small room with? It is very loud a few feet from it. Bought mine used about 2 years ago. had to have a little transistor or some 2.00 piece changed. 40.00 with labor. It would crackle or break up easy even on the clean channel. Put in two new Russian power tubes and the tube for reverb, now sounds real nice. I like the more full sound of the HRDLX. A bigger fancier amp does not fit my budget, but I am happy for those who can afford them. Or need them to make a living. And also I like my Mustang 1. Carry's easy, and has lots of toys on it. I am not a gigging musician, so these work well for me. I picked up guitar 4 yr, ago, and bass 1 week ago. Next year or so drums. :) Tom. :) :)

Hi Tank, the HRDlx is a 40 watt amp and is going to be loud any way you look at it. There are a couple thing you can do to tame the volume on any amp.

One is to use the volume control on your guitar, the second is to get an attenuator like the Dr Z Airbrake or the Weber Mini Mass. Just be sure they're rated for the wattage and be aware that if you push the amp hard, tube life will suffer.

The HRDlx goes from zero to full tilt by the time you hit four on the volume dial. It's a little tricky to dial it in but it can be done.

My suggestion would be to get one of the new one or two watt amps for home use or look for a Silverface Fender Champ Amp from the 70's. My 74 Champ sounds great and doesn't peel the paint off the walls. I even use it for rehearsals with a good drummer and bassist. I use a Weber Z Matcher and a 112 cabinet.

My Egnater Rebel 20 can dial down to one watt, but one watt is still pretty loud. I don't believe the HRDlx has a tube driven Reverb. You don't need a big amp for gigging. I gig with twenty watts or less. Good luck on the Bass!

Thanks, will look in to those. Any thing called Air Brake sounds cool. Tom. :)

DR Z as well as Weber make some top notch stuff.

Try a lower gain 12AY7 or 5751 in place of the 12AX7 in V1. That will make the volume controls much more useable.
