So I really like the clean tone of the amp but I ocassionally play some stuff that's grungy. I'm using a boss ds-1 but I want little more distortion so I play it through the drive channel of the amp. At this point I start getting major feedback from the amp. I've only tried it in a fairly small space so far but was wondering if I will be able to get that grungy sound from this amp?

Thanks

from what I hear you're best off just using a good pedal.

Yeah the boss ds-1 is alright. I geuss I'm just being indecisive because I just bought the amp. I'll have to try it out at louder levels with the pedal.

I have a Hot Rod Deluxe, and I've found the drive usable for some things, but it seems very basic to me. A lot of the time I use my Boss OS-2 (Overdrive/Distortion) pedal instead.

The Hot Rod drive "channels" come in for a lot of criticism.
The drive sounds aren't as good as the clean settings ...but aren't as bad as some folks would have you believe.
It's important to remember that the Hot Rod is essentially a single channel amp with switchable gain stages. The tone stack is common to both the clean and drive settings and is unlikely ever to be optimised for both at the same time. Careful adjustment of the EQ can yield decent results.
The selection of good aftermarket tubes can also do wonders for the cascaded "drive" tone. Something like a JAN Philips 5751 in V2 can warm it up quite nicely. The JJ ECC83s also warms the amp up...but sacrifices a bit of the "Fenderyness" for some folks.

When I had my HRD I used the DS-1 which I liked alot, but for more power I used a tube driven distortion pedal which really beefed it up. I had the Damage Control Solid metal but I would recommend the Damage Control Demonizer, more versatile. But after the cost of all that gear I found it just easier to sell it and get a more versatile amp.

Try something with a bit more body than the DS1.

 Buy a digitech grunge pedal, it is awseome. If you turn the grunge all the way down you get rock tones. Turn the grunge knob all the way up and you get fuzzy mega distorted sounds.

Check out the T Rex Dr Swamp. Fantastic true bypass pedals.

Try experimenting with different preamp tubes until you get something you like. I tamed the drive more drive channels. It won't sound like a Fender cranked. Thats whats so great about the lower wattage amps. You can crank them up and control the volume/distortion with the guitars volume control or look for a more dynamic amp like the Deluxe reissue 5e3 or a 5e3 clone. It's an amazing amp.

I sorta have the same issue, i like to play Alternative/PopPunk/NuMetal stuff and the Hot Rod Deluxe just is too bluesy. I found that the best pedal for that kind of music is the Proco Rat. Probably my favorite Distortion pedal. It can play just about anything, from Jimi Hendrix to Blink 182 to Metallica. Very simple, but very useful.

You can usually find them (the Rat II) for about $80-90, but if you can find an old one for cheap, pick it up. Way better than the still good version now.

You should definitely try one out

I can't speak for the HRDx because I don't own one, but I would suggest that you look into an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff. It's relatively inexpensive, a music industry standard, and the provider of flatulent distortion for a myriad of grunge records. I think virtually every grunge/hard rock guitar player has used one, and they're eminently available. Run the amp at the point of breakup then kick it on.
