Last night at a gig my DRRI lost nearly all the volume from the vibrato channel (channel 2). I usually play with the volume at 4 or so and the volume on my guitar quite low. (very small venue). I was adjusting the guitar and amp without looking carefully during the first set trying to get the sound right then after a few songs I noticed that the amp was at 8 and the guitar full volume and yet the amp was still pretty quiet and thin sounding.

So I plugged into the normal channel, turned the guitar way down again and used that for the rest of the night.

Today I pulled out all the tubes and had a look at them. Everything looked fine so I plugged them back in (same tube into same spot as before) and tried out the amp and it seems fine.

So....clearly I'm no expert....but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice. Suggestions re: what was / is wrong?

thanks,
dave

Possible continuity problem with your V2 tube.

Try cleaning the contacts on all sockets and the pins on all tubes then positively seating each of them in their respective sockets. It's also possible that the contact receptacles of your tube sockets require re-tensioning. If the tube pins seat sloppily, any movement or vibration can simply shake the tubes loose, causing the issue you've described. If the problem recurs after taking the above action, it's likely a bad tube -- specifically something in the vibrato channel (V2, V3, V4, and/or V5).

I reseated all the tubes and thought that had made the problem go away but it did not. Next time I was using the amp it started ticking - both channels.

So since it was both channels I figured it must be a tube that was common to both which I thnk points to the inverter (V6). So I replaced it with another 12AT7. Have gigged the amp since and it seems the problem is solved.

The only action to take now is to monitor the situation and note any recurrence. Hopefully you've found and fixed the problem.
