hi there I'm looking for a new larger amp than what I have now. I just have a small BCR-10 practice amp which is currently on its way out the door from abuse. With so much to offer out there I was just curious to see what the beautiful people of the Fender Community thought. I've been playing for about 3 years or so just home self taught. So at running the risk of sounding like the new kid on the street what would you suggest? I like that 60's 70's psychedelic sound but also am a huge fan of screaming guitar solos as well. A little help for a life long rock fan. Thank you much.

Budget?
Play only @ home, gig, or both?
Plan on using pedals or relying totally on the amp for all sounds?

Without the major parameters defined it's difficult to render a realistic recommendation.

Welcome to the forums! It's a great place to learn about Fender amps old and new. Couple of suggestions:

Post your location in your profile - it makes it easier for people to recommend things like good amp dealers, repair techs, etc.

When posting a question, give as much detail as possible so that members get the full picture. To Arjay's point, you'll otherwise be swamped with tons of advice, but much of it may be useless if it doesn't meet your criteria.

Have patience with getting responses for your posts - sometimes people will answer quickly, sometimes it may take a while. Then again, the advice is free, so waiting a bit isn't all that bad.

Politeness goes a LONG way here. There are some very experienced forum members who are more than willing to give advice and help; I've been the beneficiary of a lot of that as I've added to my amp collection over the years. Being a smarta$$ or argumentative usually doesn't work well with folks.

Have fun, and let us know your answers to Arjay's questions and we can provide some suggestions. I would add to them volume limitations - if you need to have silent or near silent headphone operation vs. 40 watts of loud, good to know...

I just play at home or down to my buddy's house but no gigging or anything special. I do have an electro harmonix reverb pedal. Budget wise I would have to say $500 max I don't want to get anything too fancy and expensive where I'm just kind of starting out and also looking into another guitar. Ive been looking online at used gear from Guitar Center and The Music Center.net I wish I could be more specific but I really was just looking for a general direction to go in. I love loud/distortion for just unleashing but I prefer the cleaner sounds for using the reverb pedal or doing softer songs (my girlfriend loves when I play n sing to her slower songs). I hope this can be of more help for my Fender friends.

Blackstar HT-5. Clean channel plus heavy distortion channel. Test drive one before you buy. The newer model is the HT-5R and has reverb and the larger, 12" speaker; the older model is HT-5...no reverb and a 10" spkr. Probably could get a used older model for <$300...new HT-5R $500.

The older "Dyna-Touch" series of solid-state amps might be just the ticket for what you do. These models include the Deluxe 90, Deluxe 112, Princeton Chorus, and a few other models. They're solidly-built, sound good, and are reasonably priced on the secondary market -- usually $200 or less.

The Deluxe 90 was particularly versatile for that exact scenario. Loud but not too loud. Perfect for basement jams.

Try to find one that was built before they totally screwed them up with a bunch of DSP garbage.

True....I have one of the Princeton 650's and for a solid state amp it does sound good. Also, physically small and light if you ever start going to jams. It's my lazy man's amp for grab-and-go.

The long-OOP Sidekick and Sidekick Switcher amps might also be suitable candidates for the OP's mission.

If your next amp doesn't have to be brand new with a warranty, an incredibly great sounding amp, that sounds awesome played clean and just as awesome played overdriven, is the 1980's Peavey Bravo Tube amp. The Bravo went down in history, as one of the best tone monsters ever, even trumping some Fender all-tube amps.

Peavey made the Bravo, a 25 Watt RMS 1X12 combo from the mid 1980's into the early 90's. They were built very solid and today have a dedicated base of fans/users. Used Bravos pop up from time to time on ebay and Craigslist. Also, you might check around local pawnshops, and go on-line with Guitar Center, Musicians Friend, etc. to see if any turn up through those sources. In Near Mint condition expect to spend between $250-$400.

Another excellent, excellent Peavey, is the Valve King 112 - a 50 watt RMS monster that has the most awesome clean tones, together with very shapeable overdrive/distortion tones. They've been around for about 5 years, and are a current-production model. Expect to spend between $200-$300 for a real clean used one.

Fender classic clean or any kind of other variation is very well rendered by the SCX2. The combo keeps it simple, under budget and very portable. The head and cabinet will max your budget, fill both your hands transporting it, but give you the fuller sound of a 12 inch speaker. For a new fender amp, it is one of the more problem free amps. I have mine and am delighted. It my gateway amp to a bigger 100 percent valve amp. For my current playing needs it has been more than sufficient. The line out on it is great and I have played it with the line out going into my Bugera V5 amp. I have a weber signature 8'' speaker hooked up with the stock speaker for a 2x8 sound. Coupled with my alnico 10" Red Fang speaker made for a joyful noise. You might find running the line out of the SCX2 into your current amp, and mixing the sound, might be big fun.
