Ive been jamming around with a hotrod George Benson in the music store and I sounds great imo, I've never played through any of the Vintage amps such as the Deluxe Reverb and I'm wondering if any has any ideas on the gap in quality between the vintage amps and the new hotrod? I dont want to regret not spending an extra few pound on something special. Thanks

I'll prolly be in the minority, but I liked my HRD much more than the DRRI, which didn't take pedals on the vibrato channel well at all.

Define "vintage" - I've found the DRRI is not the same as my older '65 Deluxe Reverb.

Best advice is to *try* before you buy.

I'd go DRRI just for the build quality alone. I didn't like my HRdlx. The Deluxe Reverb will take pedals very well. It just depends like any amp, which pedals and the quality or the pedals. I find the your basic stuff like Fulltones OCD, Ibanez Tube Screamers etc work extremely well. I've owned a couple of Deluxe Reverbs over the years. I never liked digital processors through them, tried Zoom, Line 6 and could never bond with them through any tube amp. It doesn't matter who endorses it, it's still a HRD amp. You either like them or you don't. If you like it better, then it probably suits you and you'll be happy. Try some of your own pedals through a DRRI and see hou YOU like it.

What pedals didn't work for you? Most folks really like the way the DRRI takes pedals, so would be interesting to hear more.

Any overdrive or distortions I played (and I have some high quality pedals) on the reverb/vibrato channel were were fizzy. On the other channel they were fine, but then I couldn't use reverb. I've seen others with the same problems talk about it on other sites too. I've even bought the amp twice thinking it has to be good, but couldn't get it to sound right. Never had any of those problems with the HRD, Blues Deluxe RI or 59 Bassman LTD I had.

Actually, the DRRI owners are in the minority, and the way things have been going lately, quality wise, you're better off with the HRDlx.

I am looking at an actual '65 DR myself, I wouldn't have one of the newer RIs. If you want a DRRI, definitely look for an earlier version.

+1

My '94 model has logged several hundred gigs now plus an equal number of rehearsals, jams, open-mic nights, and routine studio noodling. It's never burped once.

(of course it receives über-competent maintenance at regular intervals)

Didn't take pedals well on the vibrato channel?
Sorry no disrespect intended, but I'm not buying it. What brand pedals did you try?? Just curious.

I've used everything from an EH Big Muff, Tube Screamer and BYOC and never had anything but a positive experience. I regretted selling mine. Needed some money way back.

Remember George is being paid to have his name on that amp.

Taste in either of these amps, is a purely subjective matter. I have played the new George Benson amp and totaly agree, very sweet soundn' amp. I love the (Italian made) Jenson C12k 100 watt speaker for this
45 watt amp and 12at7 preamp tube in the V1 slot. However, I personally prefer the 12at7 in the phase inverter slot and a 12ay7 in that V1 slot.

I have also found the Hotrod Deluxe3 and Deville 212 3, to be Much much better sounding amps, now that they are both fitted with Celestion GP12-80 speakers. I'm a little puzzled to why the Deville 410 didn't recieve a speaker upgrade. I fully suspect, the famed Blues deluxe reissue, will be getting a speaker upgrade. Most owners of this amp seem to agree, that the stock eminence speaker is not up for the task of what this amp can do.. especially with 45 watts on tap.

My take is having a performers name on an amp might make for slightly better quality control. George may be getting paid, but being associated with another modern unreliable POS amp might make for some bad publicity. If you like the GB amp, I would go with it.
