Thanks for a noob question. I just purchased a reissue twin reverb. As I have no previous experience with tube amps is it normal for there to be white noise coming out of the amp even without any guitar/cord connected?
Don't get me wrong the amp sounds beautiful...it just isn't very quiet in a noise-free room.

Some hiss is normal depending on how high you have the volume control and other controls set.

A Twin Reverb Reissue is an unusual choice for a first tube amp unless you are planning on playing very clean very loud. 8)

Thanks for the quick reply!
when all of the dials are set to lowest setting and nothing hooked up the white noise is present. Even connected to a power conditioner.
Yeah I could not help myself...the sound of the amp was just too nice to pass up even at low volumes...
of course at higher volumes while playing guitar I don't notice the hiss
at low volume while playing the hiss is very noticeable

It could be the reverb circuit, turn the reverb volume down or use the foot switch to turn it off and then check.

My TRRI (a 1999 edition) idles as quiet as a church mouse, even with the volume controls dimed. Yours is likely the victim of marginal OEM tubes manufactured offshore. Replacing all of the glass in positions V1 through V6 with some quality bottles will tame the hiss significantly.

Thanks very much for the help! I turned the vib and rev buttons off and on several times and in different combinations to no avail.
I took my TRRI back to where I purchased it and there it was still audible, but barely, of course it was in the main listening area and ambient noise levels were high. One of the guys there is a long time player of fender amps and said that the amount of white noise that he could hear was normal.
I likely will take it back when it is quiet there and have it rechecked.I hope it does not need a new set of tubes. It would be nice to have an experienced fender amp user come over and listen and let me know if what I hear at home is normal.

Without actually hearing it, anything anyone says here is pure supposition. A recording of the noise you are hearing would be helpful. Due to room acoustics, my high gain Wrecking Ball "Debbie" sounds quieter standing directly in front of it than it does when sitting on the other side of the room.

Tubes are warrantied for 90 days.

Boy, that thing sounds pretty quiet to me. What was your recording settings? Maybe, try setting the mike next to the amp, in one fixed position. And adjusting the amp to the loudest hiss you get get out of it.

The recording is from my iphone. below are two recordings. one in the room with the amp on. and the other in another room for sound comparison.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. If you have to put the mike right up against the speaker to hear it in the recording, I'd say there is nothing wrong. I do notice that you have the amp sitting on a bare wood floor. That will tend to reflect and exaggerate any noise in the room.

That is great to hear!
Thanks Bluesky.
I'm just not familiar enough with guitar tube amps.
I have a Dynaco stereo tube amp with a dodd audio tube preamp and even at full volume without music playing even up against the speakers I can't tell if the amp is on or off. I guess guitar tube amps are not the same.

I know it is not much. Don't know why it bothers me...maybe just need to play more guitar with it and ignore it.

Guitar amps are not known for always having a great signal to noise ratio.

Keep in mind that hi-fi amps are designed to reproduce music.

Guitar amps are designed to produce music.

There is a subtle distinction.

When a vacuum tube amp is on standby, the high voltage to the tubes is shut off and no sound can be produced.

Thanks Bluesky!!
I think that is the biggest problem....I need to learn how to make music not just listen to it...LOL!
It is not that easy!
