Last night at a jam, my '04 HRDx had a sudden volume drop, then started crackling and popping, with an intense burning smell... I think some smoke was involved as well, but not totally sure about the smoke.. I was afraid the thing was going to catch on fire, so I immediately unplugged it and checked the back - one 6L6 power tube was fried (and smoke blackened). So I quit playing it for the night, using another amp that was there.

So tonight at home, I decided to test it out again - hoping it was just a tube problem.. So I put in a new 6L6 power tube that I had, and it played fine for 10 minutes or so, then the same thing happened - volume drop, crackling and popping, and burning smell.. I quickly turned it off, and although it didn't appear to fry the (new) tube this time, I can't be sure..

Any ideas? Cap problem, power transformer, etc.???

Thanks!

(Maybe it's time to get that DRRI I've been wanting....)

I had a similar problem with my Blues Deluxe Reissue. The screen grid on one of the 6L6GCs shorted and took out the associated 470 ohm screen resistor. Putting in a new tube resulted in crackling and popping. I replaced the screen grid resistor and all was well.

Check R61 and R62. I forget if the bad resistor was shorted or open but it was obvious with a DMM.

Hey, thanks, Bluesky - I will definitely check out the 470 ohm screen resistor issue and R61 and R62, and see if that's the problem. Sounds pretty similar to what you had happen with your BDRI..

Good link..

I'll check back in and let you know if that was the problem.
