I have a TRRI that has a hissy reverb. It was fine but I wanted to try a 12au7 in V3 to give me a wider sweet spot and tame some of the top end of the verb. I bought a JJ just to see if this will work for me. Slapped it in, and I liked what it did for the character of the reverb. However, it was very noisy! As I turned the reverb knob up the noise got louder, and when I turned it to zero the noise was gone. So I assumed the tube was noisy. I put in the tube I took out first, and now the noise is there on that one too! Now, one thing is that after the amp heats up for about 15-20 minutes the hiss dissipates. Any ideas?

Spray the socket with some De-Oxit D5. Work the tube in-&-out a few times.

BTW... the JJ 12AU7 aren't gold pins, are they? The added gold layer can make the pin diameter big enough to tweak some sockets. May need to tighen the sockets.

Hope this works. Good luck!

Thanks Beemer. No just the standard JJ. I suspected it might need some De Oxit. Do you spray it on the tube, in the socket, or both?

Get a pipe cleaner. Spray it with some De-Oxit. Now, some 9-pin sockets have tiny holes, so you can only damp the holes with De-Oxit. Try not to use a cotton swab. This can leave strands behind.

Wipe up any excess cleaner.

Good luck!

Would you recommend using WD40 instead of De-Oxit D5, thanks.

Try not to use WD-40 on sockets. Its solvent can sometimes leave a residue that can breakdown with use and heat. In emergency, you can use WD-40, when no De-Oxit is avaiable. I keep LPS-1 in my First Aid Kit --- as it seems less residue is left behind in electrical & heated sources.

Excellent advice. I never thought to use that pipe cleaner stuff. Thanks for sharing.
