That's pretty much it. It might not be the amp for you. That's why I don't own one. Personally, I'd dump the pedal board try to get a decent sound first, then add the effects later. I usually just plug into the amp, crank it a bit and use the guitars volume control for grit, unless I really have a need for effects.

The EL84's are pretty aggressive and chimey to begin with not really what I would associate with the classic Fender sound. If you don't bond with it return it. And yes, they do bias them pretty hot.

Could you try putting the amp through its paces with the guitar going straight into the amp, and report back?
