Hello everybody!

Just bought absolutely new Blues Jr. III amp.

I play it for two days (3-4 hours total). The sound has A LOT of treble. There are so many highs, that sometimes it seems to pierce my ear! Even though I put treble knob just nearly to 10-11 o'clock position.
But the biggest problem is with distorted sound. For distortion I use just my Boss DS-1 pedal with clean amp sound. My previous amp was Fender Pro Junior and it worked great.
But now with my new Blues Jr. when I turn distortion pedal on, the sound becomes harshy! There is a lot of "sand" and high-frequency crap in sound. Just like when pluggin Boss DS-1 pedal in cheap transistor amp!

So what is it? Is it just because my amp is brand new? Will it break in and be OK after some time? Or is it broken and I should send it back to shop?

Please help!

You need to take the amp back. It "sounds" like the output tubes are not biased correctly. Like they maybe way too cold.

Sorry about that. Good luck!

Hey guys!

I made a video with my problem:

Still need your help!
Is it surely a defective amp, or this harshy sound will improve with time?

I don't hear a thing wrong with the amp. If you are complaining that the amp sounds bad by itself, post a video of the amp alone without the distortion box.

Also, you will get a cleaner sound from the amp itself by turing the gain down and the master up.

Can't you hear that the sound is harshy? I mean this high-frequency buzz!

Clean sound itself is OK. There are too many highs in it, but I hope they will become smoother with time.

But the high-freguency crap with distortion is killing me!
My previous amp was Pro Junior and with the same guitar and stompbox it sounded SWEET!

You have the gain on the amp up and the master low. You have both the volume and gain on the pedal up high. This is not the same amp as your old one and will not sound the same, wth or without pedals. If you don't like the sound and are unwilling to experiment with different settings on the amp and pedal, take it back and find somethign you like. I hear nothing to indicate a problem with the amp..

Blues Jrs do not have an adjustible bias pot and are notorious for being biased too hot. Just ask shimmilou.

Sound being subjective, I wouldn't call that crappy, bright maybe, but I think that it sounds great. The version III is brighter than previous versions, plus speakers do need to break in for awhile. The type of pickups/guitar that you use will make a difference too. Are you using a single-coil guitar? Do you have another guitar, maybe one with hum-buckers? If you want less treble, turn it down (it doesn't matter about the position of the knob), turn the bass up, use the FAT switch, etc. IMO, nothing wrong with your amp at all. :)

Definitely!

Based on the video, here are my thoughts.
So what is it?
As far as I can tell, I can't say that there's anything wrong with the amp because you put a pedal in front of it. Actually a series of pedals based on the pedal board you showed. It makes it hard to give an opinion of the amp when it may possibly be one of the pedals in the signal chain.
Is it cause its new?
Possibly.
Will it break in?
Definitely.
Will it be ok after some time?
Only time will tell.
Is it broken?
It didn't sound like it was broken.
Should I send it back?
Completely up to you.

Sounds like a Blues Junior to me. Maybe you just don't like the amp.

The only experience I have with BJ III is store demos and listening to YT vids - it's a bright amp. Add single coil guitars and it will be pretty obvious.

Can't hear your vid at present, but you've got some treble on, very little bass and mids - you're going to accentuate the already toppy top end with those settings.

Start clean and get a setting you like, then crunch it up and see if it works for you.

edit - now, having heard it, I can't find anything wrong with it at all. It's bright as expected, but I don't hear anything like the things you're describing. Either crank up the mids and bass and see it that helps, or find another amp.

Even though I can't hear anything wrong in the video, I wonder if maybe the springs on the output tube retainer are making the buzzing noise that the OP hears. Possibly a loose screw in the amp, or perhaps something in the room, external to the amp might be the issue. It could even be a buzzing tube (tube rattle).

Check for anything loose on the amp, move the amp to a different location to see if the noise is external to the amp, and in case the springs are rattling, I've installed tube dampers on mine for preventative measure, and the dampers also dampen the springs by putting pressure against them.

The III version this amp is harsh because of the sparkle mod/feature.
The particular speaker may make worse ( speakers vary depending on edition)
If you want to stick it out with this amp, you can reverse the sparkle mod. Also you might go with a warmer speaker like the Swamp Thang or Cannibas Rex.
These amps can sound fantastic if you are willing to do some simple mods ( see the BilM site), buts its hard for most people to justify this on a new amp.

FWIW mibr is the non-III version and it sounded good stock, but with the kids its fantastic.
