Could someone give me a sense of the sound and tonal differences between these two? I am contemplating adding one of them to my home. I am playing a Fender Am Deluxe Strat HSS.

Thanks!
:D

The Hot Rod has an extra level of overdrive.

I play in a band and the other guitar player has a Hot Rod. His overdrive is grittier but his cleans aren't nearly as warm as my BD.

The Hot Rod is a 6L6 Tubed amp, the Blues Deluxe is EL84. The 6L6 Tubes will provide you with a much more authentic vintage Fender Tone IMO then the Blues Deluxe will, but the Blues Deluxe is a fine amp. Check out www.steviesnacks.com to see it in action and get a real idea of how it's tone compares. Another idea is to just do a YouTube search on each of them. One more thing is the Hot Rod is a LOUD amp, the entire line is very loud indeed. Gigging volumes get great tone, and you'll see them out at jams a lot becuase they get great tone at gigging volumes, but don't expect to get that tone at home in your bedroom. That is where the Blues Jr. shines. At 15Watts, its a very nice practice amp for home use, and occasional Gigs. 15 Watts is plenty loud at a small club.

Another one you might want to check out for versatility and fine Fender tone is the Super Champ XD. I own one and play it at home all the time, and have even gigged with it at smaller clubs. At it's low volume the voicings available compare to my '66 Super Reverb and my '64 Vibroverb Diaz RI, just at much more reasonable volumes. It's a tad weak for all but the smallest clubs though, where the Blues Jr is loud enough for a mid size club.

One more thing, I've never been to a Guotar Center that didn't have both the Blues Jr, and a Hot Rod to compare them A/B'd back to back. Worth a visit for sure. Take YOUR guitar to try them out, and you'll know for sure.

The Blues Deluxe utilizes 6l6 output tubes, just as the Hot Rod Deluxe. To echo what others have said, the Blues Deluxe doesn't have as much "overdrive." Literally, it only used 1 1/2 of the tubes. The HRD uses both fully as well as boasting a "more drive" level.

The above post should serve notice to all! Be careful what you read, it is not always accurate. The first part of the post is just so wrong, it should probably be deleted, but definetely ignored.

Asside from the obvious extra gain stage of the HRD, there are tonal differences between the Blues & Hotrod models which result from differences in the pre-amp circuits. The stock HRD in clean mode has a slightly more forward sound with more headroom and later break up.
Having said that, and taking sample variation into account, bigger differences may often be obtained by changing tubes and speakers than exist between the two stock amplifiers. Hope that makes sense ;^).
A very simple mod to the tone stack which mimics the old "twin" circuit is quite popular with both models. [enables that classic Fender scooped response when required and tames the sometimes overenthusiastic low end]
Both amps respond surprisingly well to the careful choice of different tubes too.
The HRD in particular is designed to be a verstatile "jack of all trades" amplifier for the gigging player on a budget. It achieves this goal superbly well...and still sees off most of the competion when fired up on stage in a live mix. [that's the real test of any gigging amp. How it sits and balances in the mix.]
If you'd prefer the HRD to be a bit more in the classic Fender mould... and don't ever require a more "British" voice from it, try a version with the Jensen speaker and try a couple of JAN 5751s in various tube positions.
TAD 6L6WGC tubes in the output are also a revelation if you like that classic "clean with attitude" thing ;^)
