Good morning! I have a Blues Jr. amp that I purchased about 5 years ago and it has produced a crackling sound. I have replaced all the tubes and used contact cleaner as well and it did not fix it. I found that pushing up on the bracket that holds my EL-84 tubes when the cracking happen, it stops it. I tried replacing the springs and that didn't work. Any other ideas?

I'm no amp tech but one thought that comes to mind is the possibility there may be some cracked solder joints on the tube sockets. Inspection would require removing the chassis from the cabinet. I'm sure others more experienced than I will also wiegh in here.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

You win the prize for a non-amp tech giving good advice. :D

I attempted an inspection last night and accidentally electrocuted myself. Needless to say I won't be touching it anymore. But I do know a few good techs in my area.

Hmmmm, guess we should have added the standard warning about unplugging the amp and draining the power supply caps first.

I was actually messing with the tubes while it was on to see what stopped the crackling sound and then accidentally touched the circuit board somehow. Didn't work out to well for me!

Never "mess" with the insides of a live amp. Glad you learned your lesson and lived to talk about it.

Big lesson learned! Lesson number 2 for me. Take it to someone who knows that they're doing!

Don't feel too bad. Back in college (circa 1975) I worked on my dorm mates amps. I took the full brunt of the B+ from an original Blackface Twin Reverb. Knocked me backwards about six feet into the wall behind me where I sat for about 15 minutes in a stupor before closing the amp up and giving it back to my friend.

Almost all of us have stories we could tell.
