Can we date them just from the serial number on the backplate??

No. I dare say Fender would have records enabling the amp to be dated from the SN, but I don't think anything's published or available.

What I would say is that I'm a bit fed up with folks talking about how old BDs and HRDs were better because they were MIA.
If anything the reverse is true. There are a number of reliability revisions incorporated into MIM production...which is otherwise no different from older USA stock.

Agree with the previous post. MIA is more of a pride thing than an actual assurance of quality. I am fairly certain that the demographics of Fender's USA operations are nearly identical to that of their Mexican counter parts.

It would be nice to know when my MIM HRD was made, however.
